The River
With a flick of her wrist, she throws the rock at the river. It skips once, then sinks. Kaisa clucks her tongue, wrinkling her nose. ]
Water's too fast.

[He looks over at her and takes a slow breath, trying to gather his thoughts in a way that aren't so murky.]
Camp hasn't exploded yet, I take it?
no subject
[ She grabs another rock, inspecting it. ]
I can leave, if you want. I know I'm not exactly the person to be around when you want to get deep thinking done. Loud an an idiot, not exactly conducive, yanno?
[ She attempts to skip the rock, and this time it doesn't even skip once before it sinks. ]
Blegh. Wasn't smooth enough.

[She's young, sometimes, but it doesn't bother him. He takes another breath, in and out.]
Does anything frighten you?

Losing my family. Losing my free will--being controlled by someone else. Being...unnecessary. Irrelevant. Waking up one day and realizing that there was no meaning to anything I did, and if I'd never been born, the world would be the same--or better. A half-elf bastard wasn't exactly easy on my mom.
[ She throws the stone, and doesn't even bother trying to skip it--Just chucks it in the river with all her strength, sending up a little wave of water. ]
Or, if you want to be a little more realistic and selfish, I'm terrified that one day I'm gonna fight darkspawn, they're going to overwhelm me, and I'm going to get dragged down and force-fed tainted flesh until I turn into one of those...monstrosities. Pumping out darkspawn until something can kill me.
[ She crosses her arms, expression unsettled, even talking about it. ]

I keep a small boot knife.
[His voice is quiet as he looks down into the water, just audible over the sound of the current.]
We... When one of our number joined, Sigrun, she was being dragged by them. We saved her, but since then I've kept one. If they ever have you, if you ever need it, it's yours. It's in my left boot at all times.
[It's not really big enough for self-defense, but it's enough to open veins, to make sure that she didn't suffer that fate. Men have it a great deal easier there. Then again, Anders still has a feeling that the architect was once a Grey Warden, that all of the talking Darkspawn they came across were. It's not a thought he relishes.]
I can't protect many from much. I can't even be certain to protect anyone from me. But at least I can offer you that.

Thank you. I'll remember it, if it ever comes down to it. And I'll pray that it doesn't.
[ She glances over at him, tilting her head to the side. ]
Thinking about fears in particular? Or did you just think that I didn't have any?
no subject
[He's pausing a lot in this conversation; it's not easy. His thoughts are a piled-up, painful mess, and Justice is doing the opposite of helping. The spirit doesn't want Anders thinking this way.]
One of the biggest dangers to the Wardens is...
[Right here, he wants to say, and can't get the word out. They're not a danger. They are an asset. Mage and spirit both, magic and physical threat.]
It...
[He shakes his head, trying to clear it, losing the thought and feeling a spike of fear because now he knows that's intentional.]
I'm sorry. I'm tired.
[Tired and afraid, because he's fairly certain he'd been trying to talk about Justice and the spirit is trying to make a point.]
no subject
The Wardens have been around for, like, a thousand years or something. It takes more than one spirit with a taste for the dramatic to knock us down. And...we knew what was up when we accepted you back. We've got precautions in place. It's not like Justice is going to see me trip Alistair and burst out like 'Oh fuck no' and level the camp.
[ She gives that shoulder a squeeze. ]
It'll be okay. You'll be okay. You're overthinking it.
no subject
I hope I am.
[His voice is quiet.]
I'm not... I hope I am. Thank you.
