The clearing is worse for wear. There's burn marks, spots where the earth has been torn apart, and some of the ruins are a little more ruined.

"Well, for once in my life I am going to be blunt, and I'm not sure how it's going to turn out." Is Bethany's reply from behind her.

"But why are you doing this?"

Unlike some, Leliana has not attended all of these attempts. Her only prior effort had ended in her silence for a day to evade the gift of song.

"I have my reasons. Is that insufficient?"

She looked over at Anders, then back at Leliana. Her brown eyes narrowed a little.

"Reasons are good -- but this ... this could put you in serious danger, Leliana. You could ... die, helping Anders."

[fightingale]

"If that were a reason not to help then a good many of us would never do anything at all."

She looks up from her blade and to Bethany. "The people of the Inquistion are in my care. Either Anders is one of them or he is a liability to them with Justice present. Elect whichever sets you best at ease."

"I can't argue with that." And she never would. She pulled her staff out from around her back, using it to lean on as she looked at the other woman thoughtfully.

"I have always believed that you would do the best to take care of all the people that you could. Even what it might do, in cost to yourself." She stated softly, "I just want you to know - what puts me at ease is that I'm going to do my best to make sure nothing happens to you, too."

Leliana's brow flickers, at that, a slight frown forming for only a moment before she wipes it away.

"How could protecting people be a cost to me?" Just quietly, but curiously. It seems to be a concern a few people have raised, of late.

She turned towards Leliana then, her brown eyes quiet as she took in the other woman. "You take on the roles that you think no one else could - to spare them. 'To do what must be done'. I watch you hold on, and my heart ... bleeds for you. Yet I admire you all the more, for being the shield in the light, and the knife in the dark. I just hope that some part of you ...knows that you're still a good person, when all is said and done. That the sacrifices you make, well, they shouldn't be your soul."

For a time after Bethany has spoken, Leliana is very quiet. The blade, arguably, has no real need of polishing. It is fine work - shining where the light catches it, seeming closer to mirror than the distortions that metal offers.

How does she reply to observations that she had sooner were not spoken, and that she has no true gauge for their accuracy, though Bethany's words ring true. She has marked Leliana's intentions well.

That did not make them overly pleasant to hear aloud. "A good person sees things through, I think. They honour their commitments. When that is done, I can consider the rest."

"Well, on that we will always remain the same. I will serve to the best of my own abilities, until I am dead ... or until the debt is paid in full." She sighed a little, as she looked around. "All things considered, I have a rather full ledger."

It is hard to imagine any within the Inquisition not shouldering some manner of weight. They all of them seemed to wield burdens, though whether they were treated as weapons or armour was another matter entirely.

A moment passes, and Leliana's blades seem...mysteriously gone. Somehow. Somewhere.

"Mmm, some of us just seem to like carrying them longer than others." She arched an eyebrow, "And some of us carry weights we feel we ought, when they're someone else's sins."
