OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

The tears were hot and sudden, nearly blinding. His arms immediately went to pick up Maxwell up, and he barked back at his supervisor: "Help me!"

"I've been released," Gavin said quickly as he got his arm under Maxwell's shoulder. "You're going to hurt yourself, being out here - We'll get you to the healer's tents -- Maxwell, I'm so sorry, please--"

"A slight touch more than unusual, I think," He murmurs, examining her face, but he doesn't press the point further. Instead, wordlessly, he steps forward to help her.

"I am surprisingly well, all things considered. I have not fallen ill, which I am thankful for, and the spirits are quiet. Perhaps I spend too much time in the Fade, and they are interested in far more unique creatures than I."

"I am Solas, yes." A flicker of amusement passed his eyes at the mention of Cole, amusement and a hint of fondness. "I am glad he so easily captured my likeness."

He didn't look surprised, at the name, and instead even smiled, his hand on Ander's shoulder squeezing a little.

"Anders. I will not retract my statement, and indeed, will name you friend twice. It is a rare soul, that is willing to take up arms in the name of freedom. Rarer still, who will brave his people's hate, to ensure the survival of their world."

"I am. My dagger has breathed its last, I'm afraid, and I am not sure if it is worth saving, or if I should have a new one forged."

He pulled the blade free - dulled and chipped after so much use. It had not been a particularly good blade in the first place.

"All of us working as healers are run ragged, but it becomes very difficult if I cannot even cut a bandage."

"I did." He smiles at her, warmly, before he pulls the cloth away. His hand moves until his fingers hover above her chest.

"May I?"

"To most, yes." Not to him. Not always. "They see what the Fade offers, but twisted, filtered through their own experiences, their own need. It is no wonder that the Fade warps, through such a lens."

He smiled slightly. "What did you think they would look like?"

"I think it is easiest to take the measure of a man at his worst," He said, his head tilting as he watched Zevran.

"I think you would keep your humour to the very last - and keep your friends backs, at the same time. Is that not a fair assessment?"

"Hours." He stated simply, as he watched her stumble up. He stood quickly and grabbed her elbow, steadying her. "Well, at least get something to eat first before you run off."

Men in Valeria must have been made less stern stuff, would be James's personal opinion. Beyond that, anyone who mocked James Norrington of being less of a man clearly hadn't ever seen him in battle.

He looked at the herbs, then at her, "Well that's wonderful. They can use them to make more potions for the sick."

"That is very good ... I could get used to quiet." She sighed, leaning on his arm a little as he led her out of the rain.

She breathed out quietly, before nodding. "Some more sick than others. We ... mages are getting hammered, but again, some more than others."
sunshinethroughgrey: (Well ... drat.)

"Oh, well then, stay about then." Bethany laughed softly at herself, before she pressed a hand to her own forehead again. There, everything cleared out again, and she was just feverish once more. "Ugh, I wish this was over. I know they can't hear us, or we'd be in real trouble, but seeing it out of the corner of my eye is just worse."

By the time he's finished talking, Lacey has lowered her arm to her side, realizing, even through her fever-fogged brain, that he's not a threat to her. At least, no more of a threat than any of the other people here. Concern from strangers is always a little bit suspect to her, though, if only because she has come to expect that anybody offering to help her with anything will want something in return. Compassion or altruism for its own sake is a little foreign.

She knows she probably looks awful, but that doesn't stop her from shaking her head, and then trying not to wince when even that movement makes her feel a little dizzy. "I'm fine. Thank you."

And she's just going to... sit down on the bench, because standing up suddenly feels like a little too much.

"If there were books like that about Marian in the library ... " Her lips twitched slightly, "You have read Tale Of The Champion, yes?" She squeezed Merrill's arm again, "If you don't like the books - you need to re-writee them. Teach all of us the truth of your people. Doing that just ... makes people think you're defacing property. And personally? I'd rather read a book you wrote over trash I know is not right."

Another pause. "Just how much red ink have you been using, anyways?" Maybe they had ended up re-writing the books anyways.

She bit her lip. "Well that's good.... I suppose. Let's just ... keep an eye on him, yes?"

"I guess it really is starting to come down more..." The field is difficult to just walk through, let alone the kind of intensive training Kain is attempting to do. It's only gotten worse in the time he's been out here, too, with the rain pouring down harder. Anyone else might have given up by now... but Kain couldn't do that...

"You can't see them, can you? The... things I've been fighting?" After all, it's bad enough the weather is so terrible, but there's also the fact of what Kain is experiencing right now.

"Whatever this is, it hasn't struck me," she replies, because something in this world or her own is merciful though she doesn't have the energy to really think too much about it, what it might be down to, why them and not her. For all the moments of weakness where she wishes she could see and hear what they do so that she might understand it better, someone has to be able to help them and that's what she'll keep doing.

At least she's used to sleeping in bursts rather than all at once.

"I grew up by the docks at home, I've seen fever hallucinations and this looks very strange, Korrin said things to me about spirits, and demons too, that she could hear them? Forgive me, I am not a mage, trying to even understand how the shard in my hand connects to the Veil and the Fade gets complicated and I was fetching her," she jerks her head at Korrin, "from an escape to the tavern because 'she liked the noise. I am glad there are those who are at least sensible and noble in their escape attempts." But at least she does try to sound teasing, and offers Korrin a small smile when she says it.

An extremely high fever, that's what. She tilted her head at him, faintly confused, gesturing to the sky above. "But ... can't you see it? It's ... it's right there."

She put one hand to her face, staring at him. He was ... he was offering her his hand. He'd never done that, ever. And his voice was so soft. She looked around again, "I must be dreaming. Impossible things happen in dreams, don't they, Fenris?"

Still, if dream-Fenris wanted her to take his hand ... she reached out to grab it, giving him a watery smile, "I miss you."

"There are enough who wish the Inquisition harm, that it is not a possibility I would be quick to discount." She looks around nervously, feeling twitchy that if it were sabotage, whoever set it up could be listening in even now. "Either way, I've concentrated on trying to break the fever, in the hope that will make the hallucinations go too."

"I hope so," she said, but she frowned nevertheless. "Of course, it's hard to make a cure for a disease when you don't know it's cause. You're mostly just treating the symptoms."

Which sometimes meant only delaying the inevitable.

There was a reason, a very, very good reason, why Ariadne had never considered a career in healing. She just didn't have the heart for it. She couldn't bear the idea of only easing someone's suffering before they died.

It wasn't enough.

"I have something that should knock you out for a few hours." At least, she hopes it will, but she's never tested any of her concoctions on a Qunari before; it's very likely it will have a weaker effect on Korrin. "Though I can't promise these hallucinations won't still be there when you wake up."

"Aye, it is." She steps forward a little, out of the direct sunlight, having become self-conscious of showing how tired and pale she is herself since she doesn't want to cause alarm with people thinking she's sick too. "I've been trying to establish people's habits around Skyhold, to see if there's a pattern with those of the people who've fallen sick."
gatheringstorm: (slight smile)

"It's not fever hallucinations. I've had those before, this is different. It's like suddenly being a medium, except that spirits are being passive-aggressive shits and only loud when you're not focusing on them. Annoying." All that's said as distinctly as Korrin can manage, though she still mumbles a little. Her lips twitch a little at that teasing and she manages a slight shrug. "It seemed like a good idea at the time...in, my mind. Somehow. But this is better."
lettersfromhome: (but that's none of my business)

It's a familiar enough story by now, but thankfully Adelaide isn't pointing that out at the moment. Glancing up, Mia takes the offered cup with a grateful smile. "Oh, not too terribly. I was just about to see if you needed any more herbs. The quartermaster has been checking on our stores, but with so much to keep track of, I'm sure the poor man could use a moment or two."

They all could, and she's grateful to be sitting for a moment.

"Not at all." Appreciating the bluntness, Korrin responds in kind. It doesn't mean she's ashamed of that truth, or that she moves to leave, though. Either one would require energy she just doesn't possess. "But it helps to be where there's noise; at least here, I can pretend they're patrons or something.

...you can hear them, too?" That takes a moment to sink in, then her brow furrows. Aren't dwarves supposed to be completely disconnected from the Fade?

"Maker bless you, Eirlys." Not even one mention of Andraste's various body parts, a true sign of illness if there ever is one. Korrin nods, understand the limitations as best as her fogged mind will allow. "They probably will be, but to escape them for even a few hours is something. I'll take it."

Thankfully she has her cloak to shield her from the rain, hood drawn, though the cold and muck is still taking its toll. At least that's what she's been telling herself. Getting sick herself just isn't something she can afford to ponder, with so much left to do...

Seeing Cade, she draws herself upright again. "Oh, no dear. I was just resting a moment before heading back up to the quartermaster." Her lips thin. "But you look as though you could use a few moments out of the rain to dry off. Might you be willing to accompany me?"
