OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

"The Veil?" That earns her attention, her hand lowering as a frown deepens across her face. "What do you know of what it is we're seeing, then? Is this...magic?"

It might explain a great deal, or seem to anyway. She still knows precious little about magic and the Fade and all those things mages seem so well-versed in.

"Usually am. Our blood runs hot up North, they say." He snorts quietly. "Means I get more snugglers in the winter, that's for damn sure."

Much like Zevran is now, in fact. Though there's no complaint there. He just runs a hand idly up and down the elf's back, stroking soothingly through the blanket as he lies there in a slightly-coherent heap.

"Watch what you eat and drink. Also, no kissing the sick ones. Or anything else, for that matter."

He's trying not to smirk, Sera, honestly, but there's nothing for it. Peppy little elf still has some snap to her even when she's gone all wobbly from whatever's being passed around. That just about figures.

One of the things he likes about her, in fact.

Kain would never discourage, especially since this sort of thing is exactly how he responds to being stuck inside recovering. He’s had enough with white mages and the like telling him to stay put… and healers are all the same about this sort of thing, in all worlds.

“I absolutely can. Look, I can…” As he half gets up, he groans, then collapses yet again. “Almost have it… just give me a moment, and I’ll be up for it…”

“It’s certainly not stupidity, it’s…” Well, now, what is it exactly? Kain isn’t so sure he can think of a better description, unfortunately, and that definitely isn’t a good sign. “It’s… determination. Of a sort.” Nope, he’s probably not doing much to convince her at all. Oh well.

He continues along slowly, shivering a little with that sickening feeling of the fever along with the rain. “I know he’s returned. I just went to see him the other day…” He’d been relieved to see him in one piece, even if quite beaten up after what he’d been through. Could it have been avoided, though, if they’d been able to help him sooner, gone back for him earlier? Is there still some residual guilt in there anyway for what happened? “But... getting stronger is always important…”

"...that looks like the opposite of 'I can'. What you need to do is slide off and stand up slowly, then you won't get that head-rush." As Korrin tries to demonstrate, after a moment. She makes it a little further than him, but with a slow and steady pace, she just can't manage to remain upright for long. All that's accomplished is her clinging to another cot. "Fuck...."

Once the image of the elf faded away, Ellana came forward to cover Galadriel with the blanket. Then she took her place where Celeborn had sat, feeling a heaviness come over her limbs. Her head bowed forward slightly and she drew in a slow breath. She needed to keep a clear mind for as long as she could, in order to look after others. Whispers carried through the air, but she ignored them in favor of tucking the blanket under Galadriel's chin.

She got the sense that something was different -- not wrong -- but merely out of place. There was a sense that she was outside instead of in the tent, and that gave her a little chill. She wanted to be warm with walls around her. Yet at the same time, there was the brief feeling on familiarity, like she was back at camp with the clan. But when she turned her head, the feelings associated with the forest melted away. So she sat vigil over her friend, hoping the blanket helped her.

"I can't know for sure without experiencing it myself, but it might be. People are saying the voices or things they're seeing out of the corner of their eye are spirits, but the Veil isn't thin here. It's something that mages can sense." There's a frown on her face, because mages have it bad enough as it is, so to have something like this occur just heaps more suspicion on them.

"We'll figure out what's causing this fever, and a way to cure it."

"It is the warmth and the massive rack." Zevran wiggles a hand free to reach up and poke one massive, muscular pectoral. Bull is not quite what he would call pillowy- but it makes for a fine pillow all the same. The more Bull strokes his back the heavier Zevran's eyelids become, drooping little by little.

Eirlys smiles sadly. "Perhaps not, but I would be remiss in my duties to not offer the warning. Though in your line of work growing old and fat is something I would wish you wholeheartedly." She nods thoughtfully, thinking they may definitely be onto something here. "The water, then. It's odd that it should only become a problem now; I fear some enemy of the Inquisition may have poisoned it."

"I promised," Maxwell murmured, a response that made perfect sense to him in his current state. "I promised... but he's still in there."

Eirlys turns a deep red on realising she hadn't even given her name - she'd been too caught up in her work and her own theories. She squeezes her hands together in her lap, hoping the sensation will alleviate some of her embarrassment and general unease. "Eirlys Ancarrow, of Gwaren." She didn't bother to add that she was from the alienage there; her ears would make that clear. "I joined at Haven initially, but I only came back to the Inquisition a month or so ago."

"Well...that will certainly be a relief. Here's to hoping they find the curse sooner rather than later."

Her eyes fall back to her soup. She should eat more, she knows it, but her body refuses to want to do anything but curl up in misery. It's taking all she has to remain upright and talking, at this point.

Cade finds this as strange as anyone else, but has opted not to look the gift horse in the mouth. In the meantime, he can make himself useful.

"Is there anything I can do? In your stead?" he asks. He's mostly used for labor these days, which could pretty much mean anything.

"Yes, you have rest to get," Teren confirms, "and tea to drink, once I bring it up for you. No point in making yourself useless by prolonging the illness." She smooths the hair back from Benny's forehead in an oddly maternal gesture, then rises. "Stay put, I'll be back soon. ...and if I find a certain Warden calling when I return, I assure you the visit won't last long." This is half a warning, half a dig for further information.

Ellana watches Mia a moment before leaning in across the table a little.

"I hope that too. But for now, would you like any help? I could carry your soup for you, and we can return to your room."

"Well met." Gwaren - not a place she has visited in a long while, but one she is passingly familiar with from the Fifth Blight bringing her passing close to it, and its ties to Loghain Mac Tir. She nods, thoughtful as she leans back in her chair.

"Why did you leave?" Not necessarily directly related to this, but a matter of interest all the same.

"I found it," he assured her, quietly.

He had gotten pulled so far into the tangle of her thoughts, he hadn't paid any mind to how he could actually help her. Dreamless Sleep, he couldn't do — but there were simpler things that could be managed.

"You're cold. You need a blanket." He shifted, lanky legs unfolding as he moved to stand. "I'll come back."

She didn't understand what he'd found, or why he was getting up to move away, or why she suddenly felt colder at the prospect of being alone. She should be grateful that someone who'd been watching as she slept was getting up to go, but instead she only frowned up at him, feeling something that felt like tears stinging at her eyes.

"Please don't go," she pleaded softly. "I might fall asleep again. I don't want that."

Sleeping meant getting tortured, or running through the woods, or Splinching Ron, and she couldn't go through all of that again. The first time had been bad enough, never mind the constant re-runs that kept flooding her brain.

The answer seems to be enough and Fortitude simply nods and falling silent, setting himself to just watch the exchange.

He supposed Cole wouldn't get sick, but it was good to at least know if there was a possibility considering the illness connected spirits to this side in some form. "Thank you, Cole. It must be difficult for you to deal with. You don't normally see dreams, correct?"

Hearing about others getting pulled through a rift, Sam nods in agreement that it would be awful. He's sure Hermione would love to see her friends again, but it would be much preferred if it was back in her world and not here. "Death Eaters?" he asks, leaning in a bit with curiosity at the name mentioned. The name was obvious that they were something you did not want to deal with. "Are they known to do that?"

"I'm standing because you're standing."

Adults.

Still, after a moment, Merrill huffs and tries to sit back down. Mostly she just falls backward.

"And then you can do mine again, too."

Her laugh is quiet, head turning closer to him. After a moment, Merrill wiggles down so that she's along his side, practically curling up into his side. There's nothing romantic about it, of course; it's a lot more like a kitten curling up alongside a larger cat.

"We'll be very fashionable on our adventures."

"I don't even like the Wardens and I ended up wading through their camp to see him. Can't say I didn't train a little extra hard when he was gone." Which is probably the closest she's likely to get at the moment to express her actual concern. "And he's got that same stupidity, or determination if you will, as you. It's not always about being stronger." Sometimes it's about being faster. Or more agile. Or smarter and cleverer.

"Bet they loved the help of a drunken mage qunari though, throwing around lightening at all those darkspawn. They usually don't mind getting some help." She makes a face, both amused and disgusted. "You'd have to get plenty of tattoos on your face, though. Not exactly the same as that paint stuff I've seen some of you put on. You'd probably have regretted it."
