OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

In general, Cade accepts where he stands in the social ladder of Skyhold-- which is to say, at the very bottom, perhaps in a hole beneath it. He has no authority to tell anyone what to do. And yet...
"Please," he insists, "let me take you to bed." His phrasing is off, and he realizes it too late. "PUT YOU--" he stammers, "IN. Bed. Take you. ..." His face reddens as he grows more and more flustered. "...you should lie down," he says at last, defeatedly.

"Just making us worry, I think," she answers, though not harshly. She stands and carefully collects the soup from Mia, before waiting for her to stand.

"I'll be right at your side, and if you feel faint, just lean on me, all right?"

If she were in a better state, she might be hiding a laugh or two as his endearing fumbles. As it is, she only shakes her head again and tries to straighten where she stands.

"I'm not ill. I can't be ill, there's far too much to do to lie around being ill."

Rutherford stubbornness at work. Poor Cade has his work cut out for him, but Mia is rather looking like a strong gust of wind might bowl her over.

"Maker forbid it take a cold to make me faint," she murmurs, scoffing lightly, before relenting and finally pushing up to her feet. The room didn't precisely spin as it did feel a little hazy and dreamlike, but there stood Ellana. Pretty as a picture and waiting dutifully with soup in hand.

Mia's expression softens considerably. "You really are a treasure, you know."

It's probably a blessing for both of them that she didn't notice. If nothing else, it keeps Cade from descending into an apologetic heap.
He does smile a little at her assertions, but in a strained, empathetic way. "I'm not sure you have a choice," he says gently, then adds, "where do you stay?"

She gestures towards one end of the castle. "We've...got private chambers, now. I had my things moved." One hand plants against the side of her head as she tries to focus, squinting through the rain before giving an annoyed huff.

"It's in that direction. Hopefully he didn't set any of the traps today."

Cade's smile dwindles. "...traps?"

He's not sure who the 'he' is that she's referring to, but is now abruptly concerned that this is going to end badly for him. He glances around, furtively-- is there anyone staring, anyone who might think he's hurt her? He's learned that he can never be too cautious.

Still, he has a job to do. Cade shuffles Mia in the direction she indicated, muttering a quiet prayer under his breath: Maker, please let them get there without either one coming to any harm.

...but mostly Mia.

Mia is the one who needs to be focused on now, but Ellana's greatest weakness is compliments (and tiny cakes, but mostly compliments). Whether real or imagined, she's felt underappreciated for so long that anyone giving her a compliment just sucks her in completely. The Inquisition is filled with people who have shown they appreciate her, and while she soaks it all in, it makes her want to work all the harder to be worthy of their acknowledgment.

"Oh, Mia," she says, moving to her friend's side. "You take care of everyone. But sometimes you need someone to take care of you too."

"Most certainly. I could use them." His smile flickers, then moves into a more familiar frown - but this one is concern. "Do we have access to the water source? Would we be able to travel down to see if it has been tampered with?"

Beleth frowns at that, lips pressing into a thin line, fingers digging into her legs. She's not mad at him, she's not even mad--She's frustrated, endlessly frustrated. "I am tired," She began, slowly, eyes glued to her lap. "Of people treating me like--like a victim. Like I am incapable. I have my vallaslin. I am an adult woman, I am a Hunter, and I will decide whom I will speak to."

Not that she blames them. Not that she blames anyone, when she has proven herself to be...not nearly as adept at protecting herself as all her bluster makes her sound.

Her gaze turns back to Cade, still firm. "I came to you. If they're mad, then they're mad at me, because of what I did of my own will."

She snorts a laugh, almost inhaling her drink. "You'd have to be quick about mooning darkspawn or they're liable to get you right where the fire don't light. Might as well paint it a target. 'Place sword here', that'll wake you up to sobriety real fast. Could at least buy you dinner first."

"Of course I'll make it up!" Maybe. Possibly. Kain had been forcing himself to keep going out there, but now that he's finally stopped, the weariness is sinking in even further. It's going to be more of a challenge than he'd have thought.

"Of course, and it..." Ugh, excuse him while he pauses to catch his breath, holding his head just a moment. "...it's more than mere strength, I realize that. Discipline and training, these are just as important when it comes to mastering any technique..." Even someone who's a natural at it undoubtedly has to keep at it to stay in shape.

"Yeah, yeah," Cyril responds. He had ended up on his back in someway and pushes himself up as Sam comes nearer. "I think I don't mind being sick if you're going to be getting me things and nursing me back to health."

Although Beleth is confident, and Cade can't help but admire her for her resolve, it's not... entirely her he's concerned about. There are a lot of people who are protective of her, and any one of them could be watching at any moment, and take it the wrong way.

He nods to her, with a strained smile. It seems wrong to tell the person he brutalized that he fears violence from others, especially when she's making such a concentrated effort.
Unless she's doing it on purpose.
He holds his silence, afraid to say anything.

"I really hope you aren't going to try getting yourself sick often just so I would do that," he says with a raised brow, holding out the bowl for Cyril to take, but not letting go until he knows it isn't going to get dropped. "I wouldn't mind getting you things even if you weren't sick."

"I see." Leliana pauses a moment, longer than she normally might, but the sickness is relentless no matter how she might excel in making herself appear less unwell tha she is. Focusing on Eirlys leaves room for spirits to make themselves known, and her refusal to let her gaze drift to them means they are a constant presence.

"In the future," she continues, tone carefully even, "I would advise that you make such things known to your superiors here. The Inquisition is to protect all of Thedas, not a select few." The moment before she continues speaking is more significant. "It is not a cause to be lightly abandoned."

Which is neither harsh or cruel, nor an easy dismissal. "We are fortunate that you returned, in any case."

The plea was enough to make him stop, though not yet enough to make him sit back down. She should sleep. She was going to have to, eventually. And yet —

"Green light, too like the color of death." It's what he saw before, why he'd tried to tell her her dreams wouldn't hurt.

She might sleep in any case. It was pulling at her, an undercurrent weighing down her feet. It would be better if she stayed.

"They can't hurt you again." It was worth saying again, perhaps. And now he was sitting back down. "Echoes, reflections, ripples still spreading, but the stone is sunk beneath the water."

Just do better. It was a slippery idea, wriggling from his grasp, unable to be contained by itself. He wondered if she even knew what it meant.

He settled into the wet grass next to her.

"How do you 'do better?'"

He shakes his head. "I don't remember dreams. Not from the other side. And I don't sleep." He has an idea, however, of why this was happening now: "I'm seeing them now because they are. The windows are open, not wide, but wide enough to look through."

And when Simon moved around him to go to his sister, Cole stepped back — not leaving, not just yet, but allowing them space. He'd done what he said he would do. Simon could take care of her now.

He gave a low chuckle as he began moving her carefully away from the edge. "I seem to recall you've told me that before." He needed to get her clear, before working out just what was wrong with that. "Back in Kirkwall."

Hermione wasn't sure if she couldn't follow a word he was saying or if she understood it remarkably well. Either way, it hurt to try and follow him, so she leaned back, fighting the urge to close her eyes.

"How do you know these things?" she asked, not knowing if she meant the talk of the green light or the idea that she couldn't be hurt. "Are you inside my head? It's not the best place to be right now. It's a bit cloudy. Like outside."

A cracked open window seems to be a rather accurate description for something like this. Just enough to see in/out, but not able to see everything. "There are a lot of people here... are you able to find places where you aren't disturbed by all of this?"

Sam allows for his hand to be brushed away, but the look he is giving her makes it clear that he doesn't buy that 'it's the fire'. He's a healer Hermione, used to seeing sick folks, and you're plenty sick. It's less comforting when he hears that she's used to being cold, but the holes in the walls are a reasonable excuse, even if he doesn't like it - hopefully they will be fixed soon.

"If you want... there is space in the room where some of the younger mages sleep. It's just a bedroll and not a huge amount of space, but it's safe and, most importantly, warm." It was a spot they kept reserved for him which he used a lot earlier on, but lately he'd been sleeping there much less unless one of the children specifically asked.
