OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

"I will." She's pleased with herself for making the connection, and trying very hard not to let it show, knowing how unbecoming pride is. "Thank you, Ser... I mean, James. Hopefully this will begin to solve things."

His eyes also turn towards the window for a moment before he looks back to Cole. "You wouldn't be able to 'help' otherwise?"

She's at just the right kind of height (or...lack of height) to put a hand on for steadying, and she doesn't mind swooping in to be just that. "Almost there. Don't focus on the spirits, just focus on one foot in front of the other."

"You are quite welcome ... and I hope it does too. I hope to have some news for you soon." He stated, smiling at her hopefully in turn.

There's a trace of dismay in the look Sina gives him, a brief but pointed anguish in her large eyes before she remembers how tired she is and weighs it against the energy it would take to get upset. Instead she nods again, her eyes tearing up regardless. Although she's feverish and her mind is a million places at once, this is the one person who's supposed to know what to do. And she's pretty sure she isn't dreaming this, which means it's real.

"Aye, well, maybe so. But I'm thinking there might be a reason why she's decided to help you."

There has to be, he thinks. Otherwise she'd have wound up with one of the other spirits, like Compassion or Determination or whatever ones there were out there. Trying to think how just how many spirits there are is giving him a bit of a headache, though, and he moves to pinch the brow of his nose before her question gets him to startle and drop his hand back to his side just a little bit too quickly.

"Ah, I got some sleep in the garden not too long ago." He doesn't remember how long ago, but there was some there, he was sure of it. "I'm fine, Kallian, really."

Cade nodded silently to Nerva as he pressed the damp cloth against River's forehead, his face strained with fear and worry as he observed once again how pale she was, how feverish.

"...maybe willow bark," he suggested quietly, just resting the cloth there, afraid to touch her any more than he already was, "that can help a fever, I think."

Sam sighs a bit at that. He had been hoping to possibly get some rest, but it seemed like it was going to be another all nighter. Hermione really needed to rest, but her stubbornness wasn't going to allow it, and he couldn't just let her go off on her own.

"Only if you promise that on the next shift that you'll go and get some rest. That and if you start collapsing you need to stop." Honestly he should just send her off on 'healer's orders', but he has a problem in telling people 'no' unless it is definitely necessary. With this he's giving Hermione a bit of space, but she does need to worry about getting herself better.

"I reckon it would." Teren is still unsettled by the idea of it all, but Anders seems calm enough, and she's taking his cues from him. He's the one who knows what he's dealing with, after all.

"No reason you can't start taking notes, assuming you can still hold a pen." She purses her lips at him. "Not that you shouldn't be resting, but I suppose if you're going to be a fool you might as well be productive about it."

"Ah... thank you." Kain may feel all out of sorts and weakened, a bit of a blow to the manly ego, but he knows well enough when to be appreciative. Despite how he feels about the whole situation. Ow. He tears his eyes away from the couple of spirits that are distracting him... which only makes it worse, but when he looks more directly toward them, they vanish. "Seems to work better when I stare directly at them... strange as it seems..."

He can see the building up ahead fortunately. Just a few more steps to go.

"I was resting."

The words are sharp and wry, the ironic bitterness behind them not entirely targeted at Obi-Wan. Malcolm, Solas, everyone, or so it feels, telling her that she should rest, that she should stop working and get some sleep, and when she finally does, what happens? Nightmares, and being jerked awake by a stranger to be informed that her worst fears and memories are being broadcast as surely as if she'd announced them over the crystal herself.

Not that that's Obi-Wan's fault. She sighs, raking a hand through her hair.

"I...suppose I should thank you. For waking me, before..."

Before it got worse, before everyone did hear, if they haven't already. And how is she supposed to sleep now, knowing that her private horrors are no longer her own? The thought stops her in her tracks, and she falls silent, staring unseeing at a point somewhere between them.

Even with everything going on and with how generally awful she's feeling, Hermione hears that sigh of his and can't help but feel as though she's disappointed Sam. Even now, she doesn't like the idea of disappointing anyone, and she wilts a little bit, wondering if she really is being stupidly stubborn about all of this.

Wiping at the remnants of tears still on her face, Hermione looks down, unable to look up at Sam. "You don't have to worry about me," she murmurs softly. "Just go do whatever you have to do. I'll be all right." Assuming she can even bring herself to move from the fire if Sam leaves her; otherwise, she might just be camping out on the stone floor and resigning herself to a sore back whenever she's well enough to feel that sort of thing again.

Sadly, Korrin can't do much to make it easier on Jamie. The larger, muscled woman is heavy, especially when she can't support her own weight very well. She makes a vague mental note to make it up to him, somehow. Later. Much later. For now, she manages a feeble smile

"I...think I can try. Though if I fall, don't throw your back out. Get Taas to move me."

To his credit, he doesn't even flinch, just chuckles and places a hand atop her head. If he was going to get sick from being around the other afflicted, it would have happened by now.

Though she's burning up. He can feel it, under his palm. That's a little worrisome, even without some of the whispers going around the keep. Hallucinations of demons, things like that. And it would be fucking demons, wouldn't it?

"Don't worry. They'll get everyone sorted out soon enough. Then, it's all the kissing you want." One eyebrow quirks higher. "Though now you got me kind of curious. It's not that redhead barmaid, is it?"

He's got a point there. Unfortunately. That he was taken at all is still something of a sore spot -- defenses that should have been covered, can't happen again, not to anyone -- but he doesn't show it. Just smooths a hand along Zevran's back.

"Just making sure. You go on and nap, then."

The weight against his side is barely noticeable, and it's not as if he was planning on going anywhere for a while.

At least she falls quiet when the cold towel touches to her skin, save a faint whine of discomfort. There was barely enough strength in her to squirm, but the effect is immediate. Rather than focus on the figures dancing around them her eyes fall shut, lips parting in a weak inward breath.

"Nnn..."

She is dangerous. Anyone with sense would say so. A danger awake or asleep, constantly hovering at a line that too easily can be crossed, and then anyone in her path would pay the price. They'd made certain she knew what sort of creature she was, in Tevinter.

They wanted her as a weapon.

And here was Anders, offering his hand as easily as anything. Dangerous, too. He is what they fear she could become, but he still wants to help. Still manages to harness that rage and show kindness, even if Justice is anything but.

Swallowing carefully, aware of the spirit's presence, she lets her fingers carefully tangle around his.

"Why don't we get you settled somewhere safe so that when you wake up, it will all be fine." The fever was worrying him, and he would take her straight to the healers - if they weren't swamped with everyone else who had this. And given by how flustered they looked - that was very likely. Ah well, he could look after Bethany if he had to.

"I would like that ... sleep. Sleep without having to fall into the Fade." She sighed softly, as she pressed her face into his shoulder again. "I am so hot. I need Teren's tea. Her tea makes everything better."

It's the pleading note in his voice that gives her pause. She could brush off a reprimand, decry it as unnecessary condescension and return to her work with renewed vigor, spurred on by the need to prove him and everyone else wrong.

But Solas seems truly concerned for her, and it surprises her enough to make her stop and really listen to him. We are here to work together. It's easy to forget that, to forget that the responsibility of holding the Inquisition together belongs to more than just her, or herself and Leliana.

"Solas," she begins, not knowing herself what she plans to say even as she asks. "Why did you leave us?"

Not angry, not accusing - merely curious.

He doesn't answer immediately, a lingering pause before he offers her a half smile, with just a hint of shame and perhaps a hint of sadness.

"I underestimated you," he admitted. "I thought, without the anchor, without -" The barest hitch, "Evelyn, the blame would fall on me. I was the one who led that course of action. Her life was my responsibility, and I failed her." The smile was completely gone, now, something blanker and darker taking over his expression.

"I am an Elf, and an Apostate, and history has taught me much, when it comes to what happens to human organizations that face such a blow. I thought I would be a target."

He paused again, and then let out a breath.

"... But I was wrong. I admit I am - happy, in this instance, to be incorrect."

"Pfft, he'd like it too much. Weird fade shite's the only type that talk his language."

Solas wasn't an elfy elf, he just wasn't anything. Didn't know whether to shake or hug him most days, so just leaving him to his weird without the help of this magic-cough seemed best. Or the least annoying for her, anyways.

"We should get...what is it they give sick kids, eh? Wine?"

Obi-Wan shakes his head, when it becomes clear she isn't going to finish that.

"You're a very formidable woman," He said, his mouth curling up to make, not a smirk, but a smile-- half a smile, "It's easy to imagine you pushing through any hardship, even an illness, and going on as if nothing were wrong. Even if it's to your personal detriment."

Compassion lifted his arm, put it on her shoulder, a companionable, almost fraternal grasp. An errant whisper, suggestion from some world beyond said now kiss, and he winced. He did not. He let her go.

"I know I'm not your favorite person, right now, but if you wanted to... talk... A friendly ear? Your secrets are safe with me."

"Might trip or slip and end up down for good, though," she points out. "Sometimes you don't have to focus on them. Sometimes it's just...focus. At least, that kind of seems to be the case so far." But to keep their spirits up, she's simply got to poke fun at him more. "So when you knock yourself straight into a wall for paying too much attention to your Fade friends instead of where you're going, I'll be telling the healers who'll carry your sorry ass in exactly as much. They'll tut in that really dismissive, patronizing way."
chainlightning: (❧ not sure)

"It's okay," she tells them both, even if James is the only one who apologized. They're passionate people, and when it comes to the problems Thedas faces, isn't it better to be passionate than not to care at all? The problem, of course, comes when one is too passionate and gets carried away...

But Anders regrets. He should be allowed to make up for it. Merrill has always believe that to be true.

"Humans do like to say everything is because or for the Maker, don't they? Not that faith isn't a good thing, but- I've always thought there has to be more than just that. It can't be the only reason to do something."
