OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

All right, perhaps that wasn't the most uplifting thing she could have offered. Cassandra frowns. She can see exactly where Sera is going with this, and she knows just as well that she isn't going to like the answer.

"I do not have one." She braces herself for Sera's inevitable expressions of incredulity and disappointment. "I sleep on my bedroll, above the forge."

"Probably because of how our magic works. Similar in the idea that both our worlds have it, but fundimentally different." Strange but fascinating. He's also heard of places that did not have magic at all, and of worlds that considered Thedas to be rather medieval - whatever that meant.

"It's mainly because of power - magic is a powerful tool. In your world they worry about those who use their magic wrong, correct? And you mentioned that you kept magic secret from those who don't." Despite the serious talk, Sam cannot help the yawn that comes from him, raising a hand to cover it the best he can.

Hearing the sniffling he opens his eyes again, giving Hermione a moment to herself before he reaches over and puts a hand on hers. He doesn't say anything, just silently giving a small amount of comfort seeing as he isn't sure how she would take a hug right now.

Sera paused at that. Literally, as much as she could with Cass still ushering her along. Just stopped and looked at the other woman. A totally charming snort followed, half disbelieving and half serving the purpose of pulling her snot back up into her nose.

"You're the worst at noble-ing, Ladybits." Blame the sickness or the fact there's demons everywhere, but she's dripping with fondness. And the aforementioned snot. The latter gets wiped on her sleeve. "The friggin floor 'bove the nosiest place? Ha! Even Cullen got a bed with a hole over it."

She still has questions, especially in terms of how magic can work so differently when it was all just energy, regardless of whether or not it was filtered through the Fade. But instead, she only shakes her head, wearily mentioning, "Sentience is a power in its own right. Stifling it is still wrong."

Her arguments are usually much more eloquent, but for now she's just trying to keep her head together, despite the fact that it seems to be actively attempting to rip itself in half. And while she would ordinarily appreciate a hug, accepting a hug from a man she barely knows while lying in front of a fire and not wholly in control of her faculties sounds like a bad idea all around. Feeling his hand on hers, though? She can accept that, and she looks over at him as she grips his hand gently, offering a weak smile.

"Do you think I'm being silly?"

"You are not the first to tell me so," Cassandra replies dryly, rolling her eyes. Of course, the useless nobles littering the Orlesian and Nevarran courts had never described her lack of poise and elegance quite the way Sera does it, and neither had her uncle, but the underlying sentiment remains.

She gives Sera's arm a tug, trying to urge her along. "It suits well enough. It is warm and dry, and visitors rarely venture to the third floor. I have become used to the noise." Belatedly, she realizes her mistake in letting Sera knows where she sleeps, and she sighs inwardly. Time to start seeking out a new place to lay her bedroll, just in case.

"Bet you've got all your pointy bits for fighting demony shit there too, yeah?"

A nice squishy bed would've been better, but Sera's not one to turn her nose up. She and million other people had slept in worse. So so wraps her arms around one of Cassandra's, using the woman a bit to hold herself up.

"Take me."

"There is no need to fight the spirits. You must face them, unafraid. The closer you look at them, the more difficult they are to perceive."

She looks at Sera in bafflement. "Take you - Sera, you must have your own bed somewhere, and I am certain that wherever it is, it would be more comfortable for you than mine."

"Demons and shit!"

Cass, how are you not understanding this?

"You need to stand vigil. Or whatever virgin shite knights do for ladies, yeah? I'm in...whatever women get into. For saving, yeah? You've got oaths."

Then there's nothing more he needs to say, for now. He can let her sit with that thought, let it sink in. She's better. Maybe there's more she can do, but she's somewhere beyond where she started. That's something.

So he lets her rest against his shoulder as long as she needs to, looking up at the space where the spirits were floating, listening to the rain spatter against the brim of his hat.

Sentience. She had a point with that, but that was still hard to argue. Demons and spirits were sentient and just letting them do as they liked wasn't always an option. Frustrating for sure.

"I don't think you're being silly. Thedas works one way and you're used to another. There are many things with magic that I'm having to relearn actually since I was taught in the Circle which has different views and teachings than those who aren't part of the Chantry." It made deciding what was right or wrong a bit more difficult.

"I do think you should try and get some rest though." He can see that Hermione was struggling a bit with some of the conversation, as if she couldn't get some thoughts in order. "Just for a bit."

"You are hardly a damsel in distress, Sera," Cassandra says, unable to mask the laughter in her tone. "I have seen you fight worse than this."

She sighs. The ridiculousness of the situation aside, she knows perfectly well that Sera's fear of demons and magic is very real. She has not yet forgotten her childhood, or the fear of the Necropolis that had often stolen sleep from her until dawn. "Perhaps just for a while."

Give Sera an inch and she'll take the whole damn nation. She predicted this day ending with her and Cass both sleeping the demons off, safe in company and not alone over tables or whatever. But for now there's just a grin.

"Good enough."

If Hermione weren't so tired, she'd be willing to speak further on this topic, at least insofar as a rifter can really understand any of it. But as it is, it's become a struggle just to keep her eyes open.

At his words, she finally allows herself to lean towards him, her temple just barely grazing his shoulder. "I am resting," she murmurs. "I'm just... talking while I'm doing it."

At feeling Hermione lean against him, Sam gives a sigh and allows himself to close his eyes again, quietly listening to the fire and anything she might continue to say. "Mmm-hmmm," he replies, past arguing at that point.

Unless Hermione made any sudden movements or loud noises, Sam slowly drifted further towards sleep, feeling the Fade already calling for him.

"Mmf." She grimaced at the taste while she forced herself to swallow, not trusting her ability to answer verbally just yet. Only once she had chased the tincture with a sip of water did she say: "Thank you."

Cyril pouts a bit. "No, I mean I want you in bed with me," he says after a moment. Usually he'd be more careful about being so blunt with Sam, but something about his fever makes him less cautious.

"Cryil, I'm not sure if it's big enough for me." The cot that is. Honestly he's giving the elf the benefit of the doubt with all this, figuring being sick is just wanting someone close. After all he and Merrick did share a space together.
samahl: (Default)

[personal profile] samahl 2016-07-10 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh..." Cyril looked around at the cot. "Oh, right." He looks pretty disappointed. "And you probably have other people to help, don't you?"

Sam notes the disappointed look and reaches over and lightly rubs the hair off his forehead. "Yeah. It seems I'm pretty popular today." A joke since that clearly wasn't the case, but hopefully enough to perk Cyril up a bit. "I'll be back though to check on you. Want anything when I come back?"

"Just you," Cyril said softly. After a moment, he moved to lie down and rest. "Go save the world one patient at a time, okay?"

Sam smiles before reaching over and grabbing Cyril a blanket, setting it just over the elf's midsection. "I'll be sure to come back quickly then. Try to rest."

Taking another moment to smooth out Cyril's hair, fingers lingering just a moment longer then he intends, Sam sighs and gets up to go see the next patient.
