OPEN: The Western Approach

WHO: Everyone!
WHAT: The Western Approach is a terrible place. You should definitely go there.
WHEN: Bloomingtide 15 onward
WHERE: The Western Approach
NOTES: This is open to everyone. Characters who would not happily go to the hell desert probably have to go anyway; it's a war, not a vacation.

Once these wastes were a land of plenty. Can you believe it? The rain came north over the Gamordan Peaks, turning the plains green and verdant for three months of the year. Eight hundred years ago, that changed. During the Second Blight, darkspawn spilled out of an enormous crack in the earth, corrupting it with their foul blood... and it never recovered, even after they were driven back underground. The Grey Wardens built Adamant Fortress to stand watch over that chasm, but eventually even they abandoned it to the wind and the biting sand.

What few of us eke out a living in this Maker-forsaken place do so knowing that any number of deaths await us: darkspawn raids, dragons, bandits—not to mention starvation from the lack of water and game. If we stay, it is because we know there are treasures buried in the bones of this place, ruins from the time when Tevinter ruled, and even earlier. We pass tales around our campfires of the things we have seen shrouded in the dust storms. My favorites are the ones about relics that could restore the Western Approach once more... but I don't believe them. Truth be told, on nights when the wind is calm, I can stand on a hilltop and see for miles in the moonlight over a stark beauty of which no other Orlesian can claim to know the equal. On those nights, I hope it will never change.

—From Lands of the Abyss by Magistrate Gilles de Sancriste

I. THE DESERT

When Scout Harding calls somewhere the worst place in Thedas, that's probably a bad sign. Even when nothing in the Western Approach is deliberately trying to kill you, there's nothing kind or forgiving about the landscape: bare and arid, carved through by sharp-dropped canyons, dotted with abandoned mines and signs of the deaths of lost travelers. Winds sweeping through to whip stinging sand into uncovered faces, and periodic dust storms obscure visibility entirely. It's warm enough to be dangerous but not so hot, at this time of year, that heat exhaustion and dehydration can't creep up on you while you aren't paying attention.

And at any given moment, something probably is deliberately trying to kill you. The food chain in the region is top-heavy, with quillbacks, phoenixes, hyenas, and varghests roaming hungrily and as likely to attack one another as the sparse local prey population. Compared to their natural competitors, the Inquisition's forces look like easy marks. The camps the Inquisition scatters at lookout points throughout the region require constant watch, and going anywhere alone is inadvisable. Not only because of the hostile local everything, but also because it is incredibly easy to get lost. One rock formation looks much like another after hours in the sun or bathed in shifting moonlit shadows, and good luck finding many other landmarks. There are a few: chunks of pillars or arches from some ruined structure, or the occasional odd pillar that might, if someone investigates, prove to mark a trail of sorts.

Plus: the only people who seem determined to survive out here are cutthroat bandits and stray Venatori. Double-plus: a high dragon makes occasional fly-bys, scouring the ground below for anything edible, armored or not.

Some reprieve comes at night, relief from both the sun and the area's primarily diurnal predators. But that's when the darkspawn come out.

II. GRIFFON WING KEEP

Bloomingtide 16-17: Taking the Keep

Only a small force of Tevinter cultists remains in Griffon Wing Keep when the Inquisition arrives, seemingly on their way out the door already, but the sight of Inquisition banners is enough to make them stay and fight. There's no need for siege equipment, but there is call for a little bit of patience. With it, a small battalion is able to evade the mages and archers on the walls and storm the doors with few casualties. Fewer than three dozen warriors wait inside. It's a quick, brutal fight; it only takes a night.

Bloomingtide 18 Onward: Home Away From Home

Once the Keep is cleared of occupants, it's ripe for the Inquisition to… occupy… But with implicit permission, at least. Those who aren't needed for fights elsewhere may be put to work clearing out debris and small animals and the remnants left by the cultists, and within a few days the fortress is a serviceable outpost, much more hospitable than the camps out in the sand. Barracks mean even those who don't have beds at Skyhold may have one here, and it takes less than a week for an enterprising merchant to arrive with ale.

III. THE STILL RUINS

Despite signs of recent activity, the lavish Tevinter palace tucked incongruously into the canyons is quiet and still, when the Inquisition discovers it—quiet, still, but not empty. The ancient ruin is brimming with demons and Tevinters in incredibly outdated fashions, all frozen in place, as they have been for hundreds of years. No one breathes or blinks, but their skin is still warm and alive to the touch.

Beyond the entryway and halls and through the courtyard, there are signs of research and experimentation, and one man stood unmoving with his hand clasped around something unseen.

Perhaps someone will discover the cause. Perhaps someone will undo the spell that's been cast over the palace. Perhaps, if someone does, someone will take the opportunity to not immediately murder all of these valuable sources of ancient information, and instead only murder most of them. In the meantime, however, it is unlikely that anyone will ever be able to get this close to a rage demon without receiving a face full of fire. Take advantage.

IV. CORACAVUS

Signs of the Venatori point upward: up the hills, up ladders and towers, and into the ancient Tevinter prison, Coracavus, that was built into the mountainside. The ruin is filled with sand now, with half-collapsed walls and anything not made of stone worn away by winds, and the Venatori are long gone, their hunt for relics from the glory days of the Imperium abandoned when an excavation attempt opened the prison to darkspawn, instead. The darkspawn have retreated as well, but there are signs of their presence. Namely the smell and the half-eaten corpses of slaves—primarily elven and dwarven—who were left behind to their fates when the Tevinters fled.

There's no sign of them now, but digging through their abandoned camps may turn up a name, if anyone would like to see that he pays.

V. ADAMANT FORTRESS

A day's determined walk from the nearest Inquisition camp, Adamant Fortress overlooks the vast chasm—dubbed the Abyssal Rift—from which darkspawn poured during the Second Blight. It stood abandoned for nearly 150 years before the Grey Wardens' recent reoccupation, and it's abandoned again now, emptied out well before the Inquisition's forces arrive. There are signs that the retreat was a hasty one: scattered belongings, opened doors, abandoned meals, and no fewer than fifty bodies left on a mass pyre that only half-burned without anyone to tend it.

The Veil has always been thin here, and it's thinner now, where demons have been pulled through from the Fade. Rifts hang over the battlements and in the corridors, and escaped shades lurk in the dark corridors, siphoning away the willpower of those who linger until they come close enough to attack. Those who visit the Fortress set up camp outside of it rather than within it, wisely.

There are clear signs of blood sacrifice, for those who look: the bodies, blood stains on the stone floors, neat lists of names systemically crossed through. Sorting through documents left behind may turn up vague notes in a mage's runic shorthand or the journal of a trepidatious new recruit (Lourde, a pickpocket, crossed through on the registers). Behind a locked door in the lowest rooms are the bodies of sixteen mages, still in their Circle robes, left lying where they fell when the Joining took them. Mages who were among the rebels in Redcliffe may recognize a face or two as belonging to the hardliners who left with the Tevinters.

"Now see, that I can get behind. I like the ocean air but I've never liked the raiders ... well, except one or two personally." As if she could ever really hate Isabela. "So Markham it is, where I shall start my little mage school."

She shook her head, her lips pressed together, "We all have secrets," she said, unconsciously echoing Blackwall's statement, "It's whether or not we are holding onto them to protect others, or hurt them, that makes the measure of us."

"For a time, I did. It's not as common in current times, but in my father's days, all dragoons had their own dragon... it was his that I rode upon and cared for. Being a dragoon is about more than slaying them." Even then, it's a whole respect thing, when facing a dragon in battle. "I know it's probably not so readily done here, though..."

"I almost didn't know if I could..." Kain stares at the palm of his hand. The mark is still there, still the same as ever, and thankfully it seems to have calmed down now. He sighs with relief, grabbing his lance once more with that hand, relieved there's no lasting pain. "Anyway... yes. Let's get going. We've at least dealt with one rift. That's a few less demons to worry about."

"Likewise," Kain murmurs after her. That's someone who seems like she'll be worth having at his side in a battle someday, he's sure of it. For now, it's time to rest and regroup... and prepare for what's to come next.

"Can't say that that it is. Perhaps if taming was possible it would be different, but..." Kain has seen the dragons here by now, right? They weren't exactly a cooperative bunch, that was just as or more dangerous than any other wildlife that they faced. Course there was awe, and levels of respect depending on who you talked to. "I wouldn't really advise trying to either."

"Simple, but useful." Certainly Hermione had not seemed to struggle to perform it, but it is so unlike any she had seen. Even the ice of frost spells tends to dissipate immediately, but when she looks down at her waterskin, it is still full. "It will not disappear?"

It's a disappointment that she had not been able to teach the spell to any others, but it may happen yet - and even if she never succeeds, one mage with such power is better than none.

"You'll laugh, you will," Sam warns him. He smiles ruefully, to show that he won't mind the laughter, and gazes around them at the vast expanse of sand. "And perhaps you should at that; my da surely would, if he was here to see it. But I came because I was tired of the cold and wet, and wanted to see somewhere that wasn't snow or bog. I suppose I got that anyway!"

"About Mr. Frodo?" Sam blinks, taken off guard. For as much as he mentions Frodo - nearly every time he speaks of home - he's tried to avoid thinking about him too much. Thinking of Frodo inevitably leads to thinking about the Quest, and the Ring, and everything that might go wrong in Sam's absence. But it's hardly in him to refuse such a request from Ellana. "Well, I suppose so - that is, what would you like to know?"

Hermione's very aware that a lot of the words from her world sound funny - as a child, she'd had difficulty that Professor McGonagall was anything other than a crazy old woman when she'd come to the Granger home to explain the magical situation to Hermione and her parents. But if it works... well, she's come to ignore the strangeness of most of the vocabulary, since she's spent nearly half of her life in the wizarding world already.

Nodding at Ellana's reply, Hermione nonetheless keeps in mind to pose that question to other mages, just to be sure she gets a consistent response. "That's good to hear, then. At least I don't have to worry about demons. Other than being eaten by them, that is."

She hesitates for a moment, not entirely sure what would be out of line for her to say in this situation. "The Qunari... aside from their stifling ideology, would you say they pose a threat to Thedas as a whole, or are they mostly peaceful so long as you stay out of their way? Because it does sound sort of like dangerous thinking, but if they mostly stay in their corner of the world and can respect most other cultures, then I've certainly heard of worse."

Hermione isn't so sure she agrees about shoes being worse than walking barefoot in the elements, but she'll take Sam's word for it. After all, their physiology might just be different enough that he has fewer nerve endings in the soles of his feet than she does, and if his people are used to not wearing shoes, surely the skin there must have developed into something tougher. So she lets that pass for now, trying not to frown as Sam tries to insist that he and his have never wanted to be important.

"Sometimes being important or heroic isn't something you choose, though. If someone you care about was hurt, wouldn't you do what you can to save them? That would make you important to them, and a hero. It's not always about saving the world. And even if it is, it's not always about letting other people know you've saved it." After all, it's not like the average Muggle on the street would know that Hermione is a large reason they're still alive and well; she'd be just another girl to them, and she rather prefers that over the awe with which some of her classmates at Hogwarts regard her.

"... it's why I don't like leaving Skyhold, to be honest," she admits after a moment. "As much as I'd like to see some of the towns throughout Thedas and see just how different daily life differs from what I'm used to, the idea of going somewhere and having people try to run me out because they noticed my hand or because I was forced to use magic to try and help someone.... No, it's easier to live openly and honestly, and unfortunately, Skyhold is the only place where I can really do that, with varying results."

He carries a pretty fearsome reputation, but it's often belied by his refusal to stay too serious. Adelaide's approval earns a knowing smirk from the Bull before he adjusts the glasses. "Shame there aren't any monocles in there...might be overdoing it, though," he admits, tipping his head up to see how well they actually manage to block the sunlight.

Rose-colored glasses. Heh. Who knew?

"These seriously just fell out of nowhere?"

She is swift, death carried on the wind, or else it must move in fear from her wake. She's a formidable opponent, and he would know. He's watched her all this time, studying the way she moves, the efficient and deadly grace she possess that, truth be told, is not so surprising from a former bard.

Bull's not nearly as pretty to watch when dealing out death, but that's not to say he doesn't lack showmanship. He grins toothily, eye narrowing on the grunts at ground-level. "Leftovers are fine with me," he grunts, before lowering his head and charging forward with a bellow guaranteed to bounce off the rocky walls around them.

Pull their attention, even for a moment, and it makes her job that much easier.

It's satisfying every time he sees one of those assholes drop, but it appears he's the last for the moment. His pulse thunders in his ears as he hefts the handle of the axe to rest on his shoulder, striding towards her and over the crumpled corpse of another Venatori.

"Not bad."

There's some real admiration for her work there. He's not gonna get all mushy on her, but a job well done is worth remarking on, no matter who it is.

"Not unless you drink it all," Hermione returned good-naturedly. "And even then, I can just refill it for you. Or cast a Refilling Charm, but I haven't actually tried that one since arriving here, so I don't know how well it would work. I should really practice with it sometime, especially if I'm the only one here who can perform the water-making charm."

"Come on, before they start thinking we both got eaten."

Cassandra smiles at that, a tiny upward quirk of her lips, and then takes another sip, a little larger this time. Still just water.

"A Refilling Charm?" she asks, intrigued. "Like an enchantment? The water will never run dry?"

"I agree. Unless we find a journal or notes, I do not think we can discover why they were drinking from this goblet." Her face is not a happy face, but unless their Warden allies admit what it was, they will have to wait for answers.

"If nothing more can be learned here, I suppose it is time to put them to rest."

"I'm not that foolish to attempt, fortunately." Kain sighs, though, knowing it's a lost cause and rather saddened by that fact. There's no chance in restoring the dragoons in some foreign world... not that he was exactly hoping to try. That's for if he ever returns home. "Though that won't stop me from admiring them from afar anyway, or even while I fight them." He'll always love dragons despite everything that they're capable of.

"I'm certain a resourceful individual could work that pair into a monocle for you." She might even have a recommendation or two on hand should he wish to do so. For now she picks through to find her own blue tinted pair, peering out across the desert. "From the rift. It very nearly took my head off- now that would be an undignified way to go. Death by crate."

That was a bit of a surprise. Bruce blinked and raised his eyebrows at the words, though said surprise did pass quickly and instead he regarded the other with curiosity.

"You want to own one of these?" Dracolisks were... well, they were owned by people, to be sure, but they weren't usual mounts for many reasons. A wild dracolisk only made things all the harder, what with their temperaments and such. A horse would be far easier to handle compared to this.

Nodding, Hermione replies, "Just like that. It's a little more difficult to do, though, so that's why I haven't really practiced it, especially with the trouble I'd been having with magic here already. The last thing I would want would be to cast a refilling charm on a canteen and it fills up with dirty water, or with something else entirely. Since the water-making charm is far easier and guarantees clean water every time, I've simply held to that one for now."
