Unfortunately for Ellana, Sam got to Cade in time, and no evidence remains of his beating at Merrick's hands. At least no physical evidence; there's evidence, if one is looking for it, in the way he watches Ellana out of his peripheral vision, waiting to bolt if she should decide he hasn't paid enough.
Based on the way she's looking at him, and her tone of voice, he guesses his concern isn't entirely unwarranted.
"Yes," he says hoarsely, pausing what he's doing, heart hammering in his chest.
