Cullen can't help it. Blunt is the way he's built. There's not a pretentious or conniving bone in his body. Quite a few people would see that as a weakness. Maybe it is, in their current situation, but he wouldn't change it. Giving up who you are for a cause, no matter what the cause, is a slippery slope. He's seen people unable to get it back, in the end. That scares him far more than the thought of dying.
