A lot of times, I see people do it to justify whatever they do so they can sleep at night. Sometimes, it's pure lazy thinking, not willing to consider a harder road even when that means less 'collateral damage'. It's not happening to them, so 'the greater good' is acceptable.

And sometimes, less often, it seems that there's there's no good decision to be had at all, no real way out. So they pick the least horrible, hoping to mitigate the damage. The end result is still awful, but no one could live with making it even worse."
