"They were. They're not anymore. The man who'd been responsible's dead."
Not that he's under any illusions that they were the only group out there that'd taken an interest in the rifters and their shards, and where there was one person willing to experiment there could easily be more. At least with Maris being dead they'd sent a message. With luck, it'd be enough to stop others from following in the experimenter's footsteps.
Somehow, though, he doesn't think that'll be the case, and his lips press together unhappily - something that only grows more visible when she asks what happened, a line of tension appearing in his jaw to go along with the expression. There's a lot that happened that he doesn't want to go into too much detail over, for a few reasons. And there's a lot more that he can't go into detail about because of the way that the lyrium wound up affecting everything. But after a few seconds he takes a deep breath and tries to explain, even if he's intending on making some of the actual details fuzzy on purpose.
"They wanted to see what would happen with the shards if the people who had them were given lyrium. Ah, a lot of lyrium, in some cases. And...there were some other things for some of us too. Especially after we'd tried to escape."
