"I cannot promise to be careful without it being a lie. Such would not be fair to you and I respect you too much. So instead I will promise to not seek out situations that will bring me harm."

That seemed the fairest way of making a compromise given his own nature. After all, he knew himself well enough to know that he would never be one to be careful even when asked. So to promise he would be meant just breaking his word and he had too much honor for that.
