Hm. Well, in the case of magi, they are not well regarded in most parts here, and subject to a lot of scrutiny. My understanding of it is that it stems from a number of fronts, including recent events and the nature of how one taps into the energy for magic here, but you'd be best off asking someone who's grown up in Thedas, rather than someone who's learning as he goes.
