The Doctor had asked people about Jamie, but most had reported that he had been presumed dead. The Doctor was almost willing to accept that. Almost. The Doctor knew the stories of 'Black Donald.' And given what little people knew of the man, he had his suspicions.
He was certain he would know Jamie when he saw him, if for no other reason than he would be able to see the lad's timeline. Still, he had to have his suspicions confirmed or denied first. The minute he saw the man, though, there was no doubt.
He approached him and decided to not give away what he knew just yet. There are a lot of reasons people want to be presumed dead. And being a time traveller was about as good a reason as any - especially these days.
"We meet at last, 'Black Donald.' I've heard a bit about you. In one sense you very much live up to your name-sake. In another, you're quite the opposite."
And there was the one thing about the 'Black Donald': everyone always knew who he was because he could never hide his hooves. There were aspects of Jamie he couldn't hide beyond the timelines and the Doctor thought everyone else were idiots for not piecing it together. Well, their loss.
Still, he wouldn't blow the lad's cover, not if he didn't have to. So, he wasn't about to use Jamie's name unless he had to.
