The questioning makes Cade uneasy. In his brief stint as a Lieutenant, he did have to know the ins and outs of what they were doing, but the fact that he is ...not Lieutenant anymore indicates he was perhaps not suited for the role. No one would agree with that more strongly than he, with the exception of perhaps the men in his command who deserted.
