That's the Byerly of now speaking. The question is - He doesn't know what it is. Cruelly mocking, maybe - a indictment of her wretched curiosity that allowed her to watch the whole of his greatest humiliation without so much as a by-your-leave. Or perhaps it's a real question. Perhaps he genuinely wants to know if he should look elsewhere. He doesn't know which it is, in which spirit the question is uttered; he only knows that it is a question that demands an answer.

She looks so devastated, to have him see this scene. He can't imagine why. Is there a single thing about her he can witness that will change his impression of who she is? Poor Alexandrie; she always fancied herself quite the player of the Game. But he knew who she was through and through, and knows who she is. No moments of her past will have the power to surprise him, because he knows her in her entire. So why should she be panicking?
