The nice thing about the glassy black gleam of the goggles is that Matthias won’t be able to see the contempt lined tight around his eyes behind them -- after he’s tensed and drawn back half a step himself from that raised hand. Not that going all cwispy in the bottom of a frozen cave system at the hand of two children wouldn’t be a fitting exit from this universe. And did he ever find the source of that mysterious stink?
