There's a logic to Ellis's idea. Maybe the noise has drawn them out, maybe something else to do with the bells. Regardless — he moves backwards to his bell, grabs the clapper two-handed. What he means to do is simply stop the ringing, but his momentum has him pulling harder than he'd intended, and the whole clapper pulls loose from the bell, into his arms.
