Ellie sounds much younger than she is, wistful about the mystery, hands pushing deep into her pockets as she tips her head back. She can't even see the whole display at once, it's so huge and she's so close.
"A lot of scientists have studied it, and the world used to be a lot warmer, lots more plant life. But they think that there were a lot of things happening at once and the earth was already getting colder. But what they really think happened was a giant asteroid that fell from space. It caused a huge tidal wave, set fires for hundreds of miles, and earthquakes everywhere. It killed most of the plants, and then most of the animals that ate the plants starved, like this guy, and then most of the things that ate those animals starved."
Ellie gestures up at said "guy".
"What did survive were the smaller things that could eat insects and little animals that didn't need as much food, and things that could survive the cold. And there was so much ash in the air from all the fires that it made things really cold, because it was blocking out the sun."
