Abby twitches, but she doesn't smile. There isn't even an attempt. That one was not on Ellie, that was- old habits, and familiar violence, a pattern she fell back into that felt as natural as breathing. It disturbed her how easy it all was, when she thought she'd been changing for the better.

She inhales, holds onto it for a few beats longer than normal. Her hand inches up to cover her mouth, breath hissing out through her nose, and she wipes her palm down, off, before she says, "Thanks for taking that bite for me."
Maybe part of her is still startled Ellie didn't just... let it happen? Even though they haven't tried to kill each other in well over a year, now. She could have made it look like an accident. That's what it was. She thinks the Ellie she arrived to might have done that, or the Ellie in the bowels of the red theater (definitely that one), but-
