Jude fits his palm over her scar, unhurried as the rest of it. He can feel something open yawning in her, like a step missing in a staircase- or at least the kind of staircase he expects. Maybe she is built differently.

Jude frowns slightly, easing his hand along her shoulder to rest against her upper back. It's over where the lungs and heart beat through the skin, and he listens to the flow of her like someone checking a heartbeat.
"It's different," Jude says. "Not broken. Just different. But it looks enough like what they usually see to assume it's something they've seen before."
It's not something that Jude knowns how to describe. Perhaps Gwen had something missing once, but there's- something there, and he can't explain it, not without likening it to something else, and there is nothing like.
