It’s an unusual sensation, needing this young woman to help talk down his perpetually-looming anxiety in this version of Seattle. Having the shoe on the other foot is discomfiting, leaving him off-kilter. He’s, what, twice her age? He ought to be the calm adult here, he ought to be able to take these things in stride, the goddamned Sorcerer Supreme should be able to take these things in stride with just another quip —
They’re a long way from New York, though, in so many ways. And so Strange takes a deep breath, breathes out, tries to let that tension bleed out of him, and says, “Thanks. We’d be screwed without the two of you.”
And he doesn’t want to say it, he’s dreadful with apologies, but,
“And— sorry. For not taking this seriously. When you first talked about it.”
It had merely been an intellectual problem at the time, a hypothetical puzzle. Easy to talk out of his ass about it. Now, though, living it all first-hand…
