[Admittedly, upon Wysteria's departure, Val had glanced up from his reading. This was not forbidden of him. Though of course he is (supposedly) very much in love with the madame, no particular weight should be given to this glance. A sudden movement will always draw the eye. But there is a book to be read, and--

Well, then there is the scream. Val looks up from his reading once more, this time to watch Bastien move to follow, and--

Well, he does not sigh. He does stand and follow--with mild urgency--though not so urgent that he does not take the book with him. The madame is very capable. If asked, he would say this is one of the things that he (supposedly) loves about her.

When he is in a position to spot, over Bastien's shoulder, that there is no danger to his wife but instead a large bird, Val must break his silence.]

But who is this!

[He must get to this bird, to examine it, and moves to cordially push past Bastien so that he can go to its side. This second room is quite cramped but he will make space for himself.]
