player plot: we'll put on a show (part 1?)

WHO: Everyone (EVERYONE)
WHAT: interviews for the dramatic rendition of Riftwatch’s glorious tale
WHEN: late Wintermarch/early Guardian
WHERE: The Gallows
NOTES: A follow-up to this post. (big ups to Cass & Lana for helping me come up with questions)

On one auspicious day, in the very early morning, the first ferry brings to Riftwatch four tablet-and-charcoal bearing scribes in the unmistakably gaudy finery marking them as employees of Val Royeaux’s foremost playwright, André L’Euilled Ouebbre. They set about their task at once, leaving no stone unturned and no member of Riftwatch un-interviewed, even if this means following them into the baths, standing outside the lavatory, shouting at an office door, or trotting up many flights of stairs.

They can, of course, be forcibly removed under the right circumstances, but the repercussions of doing this may be undesirable. Who can say.

[While filling out the following questionnaire, please place an asterisk beside any answers on which you would like to elaborate further, in which case you will be assigned a scribe to tag out the resulting conversation.

In the subject line, you can either select one of the following or say ‘random’ to be assigned someone via RNG:

Jean Evain, a middle-aged Orlesian who carries snacks with him to entice his subjects to stop and chat longer; however, they will find that these snacks are way too spicy,

Eileen Marrow, a serious and hard-boiled war reporter who seems rather incongruously matched with this set, but is nonetheless here to get the facts at any cost,

Thibault Gérin, a straight-faced young fellow who takes copious notes in magnificent penmanship, who listens with rapt intent but somehow seems incapable of taking away the correct message,

and

Louis Boucher, a fast-talking and bright-eyed man with an avid interest in his subjects and a talent for twisting their words into whatever he finds more interesting in the moment.

All data will be taken into account, and there will be a follow-up post/announcement/plot sometime in the future after the play is written and the PR reckoning is at hand.

And now, without further ado, the questionnaire (please answer as though your character is being interviewed in person):

1. How long have you been with Riftwatch? Hmm... year and a half? (She sounds surprised.)*

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch? When I first arrived here a truth potion had been slipped into that day's rations, which inspired some very dramatic confessions, if I recall correctly.

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph? Getting along well enough! (Laughter.)

4. What should be the play’s genre? A romantic comedy.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? Why? I would like to nominate my rifter friend Jude, who is not here any more, because he was well-liked by everybody and the most beautiful of us.

6. Who is the villain? Me! (She's still smiling.)

7. How about comic relief? Kostos Averesch.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known? It would take too long to stand here and list them all. Oh—Florent Vascarelle. Do you have him on your list? He is a famous actor.

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch? Oh, yes. Most of Riftwatch is great romances, you know. You should speak with Ellie and Clarisse!*

10. Great tragedies? The current paper shortage counts as a great tragedy...

11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right? My hair.

12. If one person in Riftwatch were to have a cameo in the play who should it be? Hmm... Jayce.

13. Do you have any great song ideas? You should write a song about all of the griffons. Some of them have very funny names!

14. How do you think the story should end? Happily ever after.

—and with a mention of how to get in touch, should any audience members be moved to join us.

15. Any other comments? Do you need any help with the costuming?*

1. How long have you been with Riftwatch? Uh, two or three years? [She squints, thinking to herself.] Three years this spring.

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch? [A short, not at all funny laugh.] A bunch of us almost dying in Granitefell.

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph? Making sure that didn't happen. [She doesn't appear willing to discuss it further. If pressed she'll refer them to her superiors.]

4. What should be the play’s genre? Drama. Some comedy in between the heavy parts.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? (You can nominate yourself, or someone who isn’t here anymore.) Why? If Tony were still here, I'd say him. The Provost was a pretty great guy.

6. Who is the villain? Corypheus. [If pressed to name someone in Riftwatch, she just shrugs.]

7. How about comic relief? Byerly for sure.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known? Derrica, Marcus, Gela. I dunno Flint too well but if he didn't show up to frown in the background it'd be weird.

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch? Byerly and Bastien.

10. Great tragedies? [Long pause.] That Rifters can disappear back into the Fade at any moment.

11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right? Knife skills, probably.

1. How long have you been with Riftwatch?

A few months. I was supposed to be gone already, but, [ shrug! ]

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch?

Dragons. I've seen plenty of dragons before. There was a whole pack of drakes harassing people in Antiva, outside Seleny, did you hear about that? We took care of them. Me and my friends. But these are high dragons Riftwatch keeps running into. I've seen two in six months! That doesn't happen.

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph?

Well, that I've seen? One of the dragons is dead. Otherwise I think everyone is still working on it.

4. What should be the play’s genre?

Action. Adventure.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? (You can nominate yourself, or someone who isn’t here anymore.) Why?

All right, listen, consider me. Because I'm so new, right? You don't have to tell eight years of this. You can tell what's happening right now, through the eyes of someone who wasn't here for all of that other stuff and has to ask about it just like the audience. And I'm fun, and I have style, and if you make me a human I won't be angry.

6. Who is the villain?

Corypheus? I've heard he's the point of all this.

7. How about comic relief?

Mmm. Corypheus again.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known?

If you do make me the main character, you have to include Evelyn and Fivera — they're my friends. I wouldn't make Fivera human, though. She'll get angry.

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch?

Ugh, [ is an ugh of why do other people get to have great romances without me, not disgust. ] Probably.

10. Great tragedies?

Evelyn and Fivera and me, we are here because the Venatori took our friend. That's tragic. And I guess some other people have died and disappeared. I didn't know them well though.

11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right?

Swagger.

12. If one person in Riftwatch were to have a cameo in the play who should it be?

I've said me too much already, haven't I? I heard there's a real actor here somewhere. Or you could take one of the mages and have them do some real magic on the stage, for pizzaz.

13. Do you have any great song ideas?

Corypheus should sing. I bet he would hate that.

14. How do you think the story should end?

Not on a down note. If you make people so sad they give up or stop helping us and the war is lost and my friend is dead, I'll come after you.

15. Any other comments?

I really will.

[ I asterisked so many and do not expect to cover them all. So clerk's choice.

Also, interview done entirely in Orlesian. ]

1. How long have you been with Riftwatch?

Since before the beginning. This was an Inquisition outpost when I arrived. Riftwatch sounds so much friendlier, doesn't it? Not that the Inquisition is not friendly. Please do not tell anyone at the Inquisition that I said they are not friendly.

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch?

Oh, let me think. Nearly the entire company was lost in a forest once. That was dramatic. And mysterious, because I cannot tell you how we came to be there, unless you want the Scoutmaster to crash through the window this very moment to kill me in front of you. But there we were, however we got there, trapped, and we did not even know what forest we were in. It took nearly a month for us to figure it out and come back, and in the meantime we saw all kinds of interesting animals and nearly died in quicksand and that sort of thing. It was the worst I have ever smelled in my life.

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph?

Not going mad?

No, hm. It might not translate well into dramatics, but I think existing at all is a triumph. There were times it would have seemed impossible. When the rifters first arrived they were considered demons, do you remember that? And now that idea is absurd, and they help to lead us, and sometimes they marry us, and they contribute all kinds of amazing ideas. Even the rest of us were not very fully welcome in Kirkwall when we first came here. Mages and foreigners. But now Kirkwall likes us just fine.

4. What should be the play’s genre?

Drama. Some light moments, of course, but we are at war, and even those of us who are incredibly funny — not me, other people — they take that seriously at the end of the day.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? (You can nominate yourself, or someone who isn’t here anymore.) Why?

* See, that is hard. If you want to tell the story of how we become accepted and able to do our work, you might want to choose someone who that seemed most impossible for. One of the rifters? Madame Wysteria de Foncé, she is not so hard to understand as some of the other rifters we have had, and she has been here a long time and seen a lot. Married an Orlesian. She is making Thedas a home. Framing it as the story of how she arrives in this unfamiliar place and comes to love it and treat it as her own, I think that would be compelling, and you could have a lot of fun teasing Thedas for its own eccentricities in the meantime. You judge people for their ears? and so on. But if you want a different kind of story you will need a different kind of protagonist.

6. Who is the villain?

* Same problem. There is Corypheus, of course. But that story doesn't have an ending yet. And there is no single person who has been to blame for the skepticism about what we can do or anything like that. You might have to invent someone. A composite.

— although there was a man who infiltrated us and tried to kill us all at once with fire and poison and — I do not know how to fit him into a larger theme, exactly, but that did happen.

7. How about comic relief?

* Have you spoken to a single person among us who isn't funny? And don't say me. That's so cruel.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known?

* Ha. Name a person, and I will tell you why they are notable. That will be faster.

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch?

* Absolutely. The ones best for the stage, I think — there is Madame de Foncé and her marriage, of course, if you take my advice about centering her. And then the Scoutmaster and Commander Flint? They are quiet about it, but you have two enigmatic figures with power — such as it is, you know — finding comfort with each other as they shoulder responsibility for the state of the entire world. I might swoon right now. Or if you want something very dramatic and a little scandalous, there is Monsieur Byerly Rutyer and the rifter Loki.

10. Great tragedies?

We have been very fortunate not to lose many people in battle. If you start with Riftwatch's birth you could start with one, though. I have heard a lot of people were lost at the Battle of Ghislain, before Riftwatch became Riftwatch at all.

Otherwise, of course it is a tragedy every time we lose a rifter. I believe they are working on ways to stop that from happening, but it is all a little over my head.

11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right?

I think if I have lines or a name in your production, you have missed a turn somewhere. But if you want to give a member of the chorus a mask with a great mustache, I will know it is me and be very touched.

12. If one person in Riftwatch were to have a cameo in the play who should it be?

It should be obvious, but I am not sure you can afford Florent Vascarelle's time. Maybe he would do it as a gift.

13. Do you have any great song ideas?

Of course. You can tell Monsieur l’Euilled Ouebbre that if he needs the help, I will take two percent.

14. How do you think the story should end?

[ Hum. ] With a reminder that the work goes on? Corypheus is out there, and the Veil is in danger — but we will handle it. And we will handle it faster if more people give us a hand. Or gold. From each according to their ability. [ (They should not have let him read books in the rifter world visits.) ]

15. Any other comments?

* No, not off the top of my head. But tell me, where are you from?

1. How long have you been with Riftwatch? A couple of years. Three, maybe?

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch? Dramatic things happen to Riftwatch all the time, really. I mean, if you're planning to stay longer than a weekend, no doubt you'll witness it yourself. Though, one time, there was a rather bad vermin infestation and everyone had to sleep in the dining hall. Not me, though, I live elsewhere. But I understand it was quite severe.

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph? I'd check back in when the war is done.

4. What should be the play’s genre? Farce, absolutely.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? (You can nominate yourself, or someone who isn’t here anymore.) Why? I mean, it could really be anyone, but I think it ought to be a rifter. You can get in a lot of silly cultural mistakes and whatnot, as well as some pathos around being away from home. I'd suggest someone who's charming and good looking, battle-capable for fight scenes and the like, has been here for a few years at least so you can gather material—

6. Who is the villain? Oh. Uhm. Corypheus, I should think.

7. How about comic relief? The ferryman. The grouchiest one.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known? Derrica. Actually—I mean, it depends on the story, and you really shouldn't tell her I said this, but to be quite honest, she'd make a most fascinating protagonist. There's also the leaders, I suppose. Gwenaëlle Baudin, I reckon, deserves a mention, and she's a writer. And there was a rifter here, Richard, he disappeared some time ago, but he was the head healer for a bit. It would, of course, be reasonable to include some mention of the departed.

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch? [ Huge breath out. ] Probably.

10. Great tragedies? Someone'll have mentioned the Granitefell business, I'm sure. That'd be a wonderful inclusion. A terrible tragedy and a happy ending.

* 11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right? That I'm not truly a qunari, I'd think. No, I know, I look like a qunari, but in my world, I'm what's called a tiefling, and—

12. If one person in Riftwatch were to have a cameo in the play who should it be? Right. Uh. Oh, like, actually doing acting? I mean, I wouldn't say no.

13. Do you have any great song ideas? Gods no.

14. How do you think the story should end? Happily!

15. Any other comments? Is there going to be singing?

2. What is the most dramatic thing that has ever happened to Riftwatch?
Oh, definitely that time half of us died. Half's kind of an exaggeration, but it was like, most of the Forces division and a bunch of other people.*

3. What is Riftwatch's greatest triumph?
Going back in time. I wasn't involved in that. I was one of the dead ones, so you'd have to ask someone else.

4. What should be the play’s genre?
The play's what? Who cares. Just don't make it boring.

5. If you had to pick a protagonist, or main character, from Riftwatch’s ranks, who would it be? (You can nominate yourself, or someone who isn’t here anymore.) Why?
Just make it all the division leaders. That way you won't piss someone off by ignoring them.

6. Who is the villain?
Of... Riftwatch? Man, you should add a twist where one of us has been feeding information to the enemy this entire time. Not me, obviously. Someone else. Wait, actually— [ That could ruin someone's life, Clarisse. ] Don't do that, actually.

7. How about comic relief?
The griffons. Everyone loves to watch animals fucking with people.

8. Any other notable characters among the people you know or have known?
Everybody here is a weirdo. If you ask around you'll get a ton of material.*

9. Have there been any great romances in Riftwatch?
I don't know anything about that shit. [ Shut up!!!! ]

10. Great tragedies?
Like I already said, the time a ton of us died? You could also go into the way rifters disappear, but—look, you can't have a bunch of sad shit without a happy ending. That's just tragedy, and nobody wants to sit around and watch a tragedy about a war we're still in the middle of. At least the Granitefell thing worked out in the end. Use that.

11. If an actor should portray you in the production, what is most important for them to get right?
My muscles, obviously. [ She's flexing. ]

12. If one person in Riftwatch were to have a cameo in the play who should it be?
Not me.

13. Do you have any great song ideas?
There's this song by Metallica called For Whom the Bell Tolls? It has this awesome guitar solo in the beginning. It goes like— [ She's wiggling her fingers like she's playing air guitar and "da na na na"ing under her breath, but after a few seconds she gives up. ] Forget it, you're just going to pick something boring anyway.

14. How do you think the story should end?
Am I going to get paid for doing your job for you? Come on.

15. Any other comments?
I'm late for lunch.
