The yowling reaches Merrick's ears, making them twitch. He doesn't move from his spot right away, but eventually he has to go and find the distressed animal, because he can't just let it suffer. His eyes glow faintly in the darkness as he searches it, then widen in surprise as the cat appears suddenly and runs past him.

Then he turns to see the human. Odd-looking, and something seems off about him. It was like he had materialized out of thin air.

He pulls his pipe from his lips. "Was that your cat? It's long gone now."
