i recognize it for me

Out of respect for the significance of this thing she doesn't have to be here for, she doesn't elbow him directly in the solar plexus or tell him, for instance, that he also doesn't have to be a sadsack little twerp about it, either—

probably, he is actually allowed to be a sadsack little twerp about this. She hasn't even said, you said that already, any of the several subsequent times he'd told her about the corner that it was on. She thinks about the scorched stones of Halamshiral; the burned down house that she never saw the inside of. She watches him understand that the house on the corner isn't here any more, and leans her shoulder against his.

Gwenaëlle doesn't have to be here, but it feels important that she choose to be.

“It's remembered,” she offers, passing by you don't have to be here like he didn't say it, or at least, it wasn't important and she has elected not to acknowledge it. “By you. Maybe by someone else, I think those are names,” with a nod towards where she's caught sight of the script carved into stone,

maybe you'll know some of those, she doesn't say, even though she thinks it would be the first thing she would look for. She knows from her own grim experience that it's the rare day a list of names carved in stone is a happy thing to read.
