In an alienage in Nevarra, the last thing Gwenaëlle is expecting is to recognise any of those names. A moment after she does, the first thing she thinks is: stupid not to have considered the possibility that he would have lost family here

and then she snags on the same thing that has stopped him in his tracks and she frowns at it, reaches out to touch his name as if it might dissipate, as if it might make more sense underneath her fingers. Ostara Carsus. Cedric Carsus. And he is standing beside her, and not so long ago she had wondered, what happens to the babies born to mages? It can't be none of them, she'd thought, that become orphans making up the ranks.

How easily she had been lifted from her mother, and made something different than she had been born. How easy it is to take children like them from the people who love them—

“When did you leave the alienage?” she asks, quietly, instead of: how did you come to be a Templar? which is what she wants to know, and probably where she will eventually get to now that the thought is twisting slowly, turned over and over. Howdid he leave the alienage?

How is his name here, on this wall?
