Perhaps it helps that there’s nothing seductive about the act, either, just quick efficiency; growing up, beggars couldn’t be choosers when there’s only so many sources of water within reach for washing up in, and heating snow took forever in winter. So this lake is nice, especially in the dry-baking heat.

“Korth the Mountain-father,” Astrid explains, gamely, still floating. “He’s our oldest god and the strongest.”

Our is vague, so she remembers to backtrack and fill in: “The Avvar, I mean. We receive what we need from him. Good green earth, deer or berries when you’re hungry, everything found in the mountains. We’re right on the edge of the Hunterhorns out here— which isn’t home and his throne’s not here so maybe it doesn’t count, but I figure best be on the safe side. A mountain’s a mountain, innit?”

And she’s a little biased. If the Andrastians can be annoying and say that the Maker touches everything everywhere, of course she’ll assume that her own does, too.
