With the lit-up wand shedding some, well, light on the whole situation, Hermione takes only a second to realise that the scratching sounds are not from quill-tip on paper, or parchment, but Petrana's fingers. On stone.

Corporeal transfiguration - it's fascinating. She doesn't know a spell for that, but it would be so useful and save up on paper to be able to inscribe onto tablets, right? Plus, not to mention - useful for later, when they're on the surface again.

"I have a feeling the runes I am familiar with are nothing in comparison to what we're seeing," she quips, a little sardonic. Ancient Runes that she's gone three years without studying now - how much of the knowledge learned in school has she forgotten? Put Hermione Granger in a bench to sit through her N.E.W.T.S right now, and she'd likely fail some.

But she is alive.

Three cheers for practical magic. "It's an elegant solution to not carrying pen and paper down here. Better than relying on our memory. Can you only do this on stone, or will anything do? If you run out of space on that tablet, we can repurpose a shield."
