That makes some sense. Hide behind the party he's pissed off the least. The chevalier-trained part of Nathaniel reaches for the word coward (the same word was applied to archery once, but out loud and by the chevalier himself), but the rest of him is drawn by the pragmatism of it. Really, it's no different from reaching out to allies to form a plan of defense. He has to know what his options are, and begin to make amends in ways that are least likely to end in his death.
