Her attention is elsewhere, so she doesn't see Nathaniel until he calls her name. When her head automatically whips around to the sound of his voice she stops in her tracks, unsure of what exactly she's supposed to say. So per usual, it's the first thought that pops into her head that comes out of her mouth.
