Quickly seeing the futility in trying to either shove Merrick off him or struggle out from under him, and too shocked to do much else, Cade resorts to shielding his face with his one mobile arm, with limited results. Each subsequent blow disorients him further, until his plan of action is reduced to lying there waiting for it to stop.
