We of the Dairsmuid Circle wait now, behind barricades. I have sent word to our brother and sister mages of this outrage. When they break through, we will not die alone.

"Some of the mages are related to one another, those at the camp are mostly friends though there are a few aunts, a sister to one young man, a couple of brothers, and a woman everyone calls grandmother." Even Araceli has taken to calling her that in her stay, after being whacked over the knuckles with a spoon when she gave her a title too many times. "The mages? I think they will all be fine, Korrin and Kas should be fine too, Kont-aar is to the north but there are plenty of Tal-Vashoth or Vashoth." Please feel free to point out that she hasn't brought up the Rifters (although she's one) or the whole Seekers and bonus Templar thing...

"They have a lot at stake, and it's a good thing you've gotten into their good graces." Thankful, truly, though he won't say that now, at least not until the mission is complete and everyone is safe. He would never had known had she not been in Rivain, had she not learned on her own. "If...you need myself, Seeker Darton, and Commander Norrington to be out of sight...?"

"I hope that the Inquisition is in good standing with them, that was how I was introduced at first." Perhaps a little calculated on her part but she hadn't known where it would lead when someone had come to ask her questions, and even though she was here studying, she'd felt the need to do more and to speak well of as many as she could. "Honestly? I would rather they know who'll be helping, there are too many ways this could go wrong already, I spent half the night awake trying to imagine the possibilities. If they ask you to step away or not to speak to them? Well you are all gentlemen, I trust you to be respectful of their feelings. But you are all here to help."

"It's oftentimes difficult to convince a mage that a Templar is around to help, given the current atmosphere." The rebellion, yes, and Dairsmuid especially. And Seekers are, in some ways, just glorified Templars. "We will be respectful and do whatever is needed to be done. Even if they don't believe our intentions, that there are so many more of the rest of you should help put them at ease."
It doesn't help put Malcolm at ease, of course, but for other reasons. "These people have every reason not to trust us, but if word gets around that the Inquisition helped, that will only serve to bolster our appearance."

"I get the picture that tensions had been brewing a long time before they finally came to a boil, in this case most realised what was happening." People aren't lobsters, fortunately, but she isn't so crass as to make a comparison at a time like this. "However, from what I was told - perhaps fate was on my side in seeking out a Templar to speak with shortly before my trip here - it seemed rather more than simply a glorified position. A captain of the guard might be a glorified guard, but when you have an entirely different title, with different arms, when you are not stationed within Circles? There are three mages, pairing you up might suit." There's also The Outsider but she made a separate promise to him so he wouldn't risk being attacked should he cause alarm, and there's also another rifter in Kirk, but that could also work. Flanking them at all times to keep the peace.
She can sympathise to an extent; she hasn't slept a whole night since they first approached her and asked her to read the journal. "When the Nightingale granted me leave to study here, that was to help the Inquisition, but when it still needs support? Well I know sailors, from home of course, I know how much they talk. If I spoke well of the good work the Inquisition is doing, and that it's trying? That something good might come of it."

"Pairing might work. It might backfire. It might be seen as our mages being kept on a short leash by their Templar masters." There's no good way around or through this. But to fight Templars, the expertise of Seekers and a fellow Templar are necessary. Although in some small ways, he's glad Aleron is here than Cassandra. She has enough to deal with. This isn't her fight. And if she finds out his connection...he isn't sure how she might take it. Aleron would at least react only mildly, as he reacts to nearly everything.
"The good will of the Inquisition will out itself. Soon enough, all of Thedas will hear of the work being done. The large and the small." He has to believe that. Has to hope, when his hope is at its lowest. "Even if all they think of the tales is that they are tales, said tales will spread. Among those who do not believe will be those who do. This started small. The stone is rolling down the mountain and is only gaining momentum."

"Is this how it feels in Thedas? Dancing on the head of a pin with everyone screaming and howling on all sides?" Malcolm doesn't know her well enough to know how rare it is that she sounds tired and defeated, but she looks young. Bravado and putting a brave face on only last so long when you keep considering every outcome. "Even if we tried to spin it? Given that one is Vashoth, one is Dalish and one is Anders, a man whose history I'm well aware of now? We will approach with caution. With the supplies Madame LeBlanc has sent from the Council, and a reiteration that sanctuary has been extended."
It will have to do, she thinks, not liking that she can feel the bitter twist of her lips. "I am sure there is some Chantry verse that I've forgotten that applies to this, you must forgive me Seeker."

The mages will not like them. The allies of the mages will not like them. People in general will not like them. Though the story that will get spread will be agents of the Inquisition, not a Vashoth, a Dalish, a Templar, several Seekers, people from beyond this realm, and Anders. (The mages might like Anders, hilariously enough, or they might blame him specifically for what happened.)
He frowns down into his drink when it is set back on the table, though whether it's in thought or merely to avoid her gaze, it's difficult to say. "I would not expect you to know any verses of the Chant, relevant or not." It feels like blame, and he feels compelled to defend--perhaps not the Chantry, but the Chant itself. But until it is apparently so, he will leave it at his neutral reply.
fff wrong copy/paste
Perhaps Thedas will finally breathe. So many wars and conflicts have decided to happen all at once, surely there must come a time when they will think to trade in their swords for ploughshares, to build alliances not break them.
"I've studied a little," she admits with a tired smile, a little embarrassed and nervous; Seeker Reed is a man of faith, all Seekers must be, and though speaking with Seeker Darton went well, Seeker Pentaghast left a very sour taste in Araceli's mouth. "Religion is...somewhere between the Dalish and the Rivaini where I hail from. We worship the sea in my country so the Chant is very different, I remember some verses when I need them. The blessed are the peacekeepers part. I'm in Thedas and I have sworn my allegiance to the Inquisition, to serve as best I can, I should probably make the effort to memorise it most of it."

He sits up straighter, contemplating Araceli's suggestion to herself. "My lady, rote memorisation of the Chant takes years. For academic purposes, I wouldn't suggest it, unless you'd care to take your studies of Andrastianism and religion further. And many will try to turn you to the Maker, might take offense if you refuse. Not here in the Inquisition, hopefully, where we take those of all faiths, side by side, but elsewhere" Still, despite his caution, he won't tell her straight up not to. In fact, it's rather charming that a Rifter has sown any interest at all. "Have you sat in any chapels or chantries, heard versus sung?"
no subject
"Certain verses might help more than only being able to offer what comes from home when not everyone really likes or trusts a rifter. The more well-known ones at the very least." Nothing would ever turn her from the sea, not when it's in her blood but that's all she has: phrases that she has to explain to people, or remarks about playing the hand you're dealt, rolling the hard six. They aren't always spectacularly helpful here the way they would be at home, and it leaves her feeling useless more often than she'd like. "I can't say I have. The only singing I hear is my own when I'm practicing along with my lute; some areas of study require a great deal more catching up when you come from so very far away."
Normally she wouldn't skirt around saying the word bard but when she doesn't know who might be listening to them, even here it might not be a word to throw around lightly.

"People find comfort in the Chant, in the familiar and in the idea of the Maker's love. It will definitely help you fit and blend in more, yes, though I imagine you're much more at home here in Rivain." Even with as much time as he's spent in Orlais, he still can't think of it as home, always missing the simplicity of Ferelden. But he gives as much of a wistful smile as he can. "If you ever find yourself in Val Royeaux, the Chant is always being sung in the Grand Cathedral. I suppose it must be quieter there now, after Her Holiness has gone, but the architecture has been made so the acoustics are like a blessing itself. The chapel at Skyhold is a little small, but perhaps you could visit a chantry in one of the countryside towns and hear the townsfolk instead."

So much of her country's history is told in song, the music spilling out from the taverns or the call and response on the deck of a ship to help a crew work together. Everywhere someone is in Castileos, there's music.
