Lonely I, I'm so alone now [open]

WHO: Rey and you?
WHAT: Rey settling in to live in the hold
WHEN: after August 10
WHERE: various spots all over Skyhold
NOTES: I have a permissions post for her jedi magics if you're so inclined, if you want a specific starter hmu on pm or plurk.

i. the ramparts

Rey is used to feeling alone. Most of her life has been a self-fulfilling prophecy of loneliness, and every time she thought she may have found a friend she was betrayed or abandoned. Standing on the ramparts overlooking the valley of the mountains she had learned were called the Frostbacks, she wraps her arms a little tighter around herself, reflecting. She'd really thought for a second that she had found her true place in the galaxy, her true calling. Now, she doesn't know what she's supposed to do.

"Probably should have gone back to Jakku," she mutters to herself, a humorless smile touching her lips as she shivers in the wind.

ii. the main hall

She picked a table that looked fairly out of the way, but was near enough to one of the sconces that she could see what she was doing. She isn't trying to stand out, and she keeps her head down, eyes focused on the partly disassembled lightsaber on the table in front of her. She's never worked on a lightsaber before, but the best way to figure out how to fix something is usually to take it apart. Everything she's carefully meticulous about, because she wants to remember how to put it back together. It's not really hers after all. Luke Skywalker would probably be upset if she ruined his old lightsaber.

"Looks like this piece blew out and..." she occasionally mutters something, as she figures out why exactly the lightsaber doesn't seem to be working, when it had been in fine working order before she'd passed through the Rift. It likely won't make sense to anyone passing by her little makeshift worktable.

iii. the library

In her wandering, Rey finds herself in Skyhold's library, and in an odd state of reverence. Paper and leather-bound books are extremely uncommon on Jakku, the weather and poor living conditions making it extremely impractical to keep something that could become ruined so easily. She walks the stacks, just looking at all the different books, and absently picking one with an interesting script on the spine. She opens it, expecting to find a new world of knowledge, but the look of disappointment that flashes across her face is plain as she realizes she can't read the script on the page.

"This isn't Basic, how do they read this?" she frowns down at the pages, turning a few as if that will divulge it's secrets.

II, August 11

It wasn't that Korrin had wanted to take a break from the healing tents, but since Asher had other company and her appetite had slightly returned, she decided a quick trip to the kitchen was in order. Loading a plate and filling a pitcher with some cider, Korrin headed back up and glanced for a decent place to sit. She wasn't purposely going out of her way to choose any company, just tired and full of heartache and wanting to put her feet up for a bit. So she did, thus claiming the seat before her as well, as she poured herself cider while breaking off a piece of bread and cheese.

The tall, horned woman glances over toward Rey...or it would have just been a passing glance until what she's working on is noted. Her eyebrows raise, not really expecting to see that particular weapon on anyone but a certain rifter liaison.

"The politeness filters through, even if the actual words do not. Shaking her head, Korrin manages a wry smile and shrug. "I've no idea what you're saying, sorry. It's the Trade tongue for me, or Rivaini, Antivan and Qunlat."

But given the type of weapon she's working on, Korrin would doubt she has a working knowledge of the latter three.

"Nice lightsaber."

Korrn nods, taking a sip before responding. "A rifter friend of mine, Obi-Wan, has one of those. Do you know him? Anyway, it's similar to the fighting style knight-enchanters use."

She extents a hand to her hip and takes out an empty sword hilt. "The reason it functions is different, but the result -glowing blade of doom- is pretty much the same."

Placing the hilt back, Korrin breaks off another piece of bread, nodding. While many rifters seem to be the only one from their worlds, there are some that share them, so that Rey and Obi-Wan would have the same origin isn't particularly shocking to her. "That's the one. He's the Inquisition liaison for the rifters, so if anyone gives you crap or you need a mouthpiece to the Inquisition, he's that guy. You know him?"

That gets her attention, and she needs a moment to clear her throat before she starts choking. Because, what. "He's...this must be one of those weird rift space-time things, because I've seen the man around and he's pretty damn alive. Ask for him over the sending crystal and you'll find out for yourself."

She takes out the locket and chain from beneath her clothing, beneath a necklace containing the tooth of an animal as well. Flipping it over, she indicates the crystal within.

Placing it back, Korrin shrugs and reaches for her cup. "Maybe, but there wouldn't be much point in a world that doesn't have Jedi or would know anything about them without someone telling us. Especially when many don't know what to think about rifters anyway. I try explaining that they're not demons and I'd know, being a mage, but some heads are harder than others."

That gets a raised eyebrow out of her, but she continues. "Mages are people who have the ability to use magic, to control and shape it to different effect. Healing spells, zapping someone with lightning, freezing them in place...that's all magic, and it all stems from the Fade. You know, that place you stepped out of to get here? So, we channel energy from the Fade and make it work for us. It's an inborn trait that shows up sooner or later, usually around puberty. And once you're a mage, for better or worse -usually worse- Thedas won't see you as anything else. We're not exactly popular, since the southern Chantry has taught people to hate us for what we are. A lot of the bullshit politics you'll hear around Skyhold are because of that."
