OPEN: Cloudreach Event

WHO: Anyone at Skyhold
WHAT: Cloudreach showers bring weird shit.
WHEN: Cloudreach 15 onward
WHERE: Skyhold
NOTES: For information about the illness, its effects, and its cure, please make sure to also read the OOC Post.

This high in the mountains, snowstorms are to be expected. But this one is large and lingering, hanging over the valley and the fortress for days. In Skyhold, with its eternal spring, the snow becomes rain before it hits the ground, leaving inhabitants and visitors to wade through puddles and mud in the courtyards. In the valley, snow and ice accumulate under cloud cover—and worse, when the clouds finally thin, a whole winter's accumulation of snow begins to melt in the sunlight.

Within a day, the ground is sodden and mucky enough to give the survivors of the Fallow Mire (or Ferelden in general) unpleasant flashbacks, and those who live in tents are issued additional hastily-constructed wooden pallets to raise their floors above the mud. It is worse outside the fortress: streams and rivers have overflowed their banks, rapids run twice as fast as normal, and flash flooding has made even road travel treacherous.

On Cloudreach 17 a mudslide buries the pass into Skyhold from the west, and on the 19th a sheet of snow loosened from a mountainside collapses into the shadowed passage from the east. An Inquisition supply caravan is caught in the latter, scattering wagons and goods across the hillside and leaving a dozen people and horses in need of rescue and medical care.

Healers may find themselves stretched thin, as in addition to the usual rash of blisters and sniffles that come from days of rain and flooding, an illness begins to sweep through Skyhold's ranks from around the 16th onward. It's marked first by climbing fever, then by flashes at the edges of vision—green light and jagged formations that aren't there, beings of light and shadow gathering around people or clustering in corners—and distant voices, coherent for brief moments if you're quiet and still and not trying too hard to listen.

"I'll have to keep using that strategy... that's the only thing that seems to work, to make them be silent..." Kain really isn't too fond of this predicament, it's bad enough to be hearing things, but to be ill on top of that... it's just an all around unpleasant state to be in. Ugh. "Are the demons making contact as well? I hadn't realized..." Ugh, it would explain though why sometimes the voices and such are even more disturbing.

Shut up.

[ The most gentle nursemaid, right here.

He's been working on making a poultice, taking it upon himself since the healers are so backed up right now. Every Dalish knows the healing basics, and he can at least try to bring down the fever this way.

He rolls it up tight and wets it with a kettle full of hot water. He unbuttons Metaari's shirt and places it over his chest.

[ He lifts a hand and feebly tries to bat Merrick away but finds that holding it in the air for too long is exhausting so he just lets it drop back down to the bedding beneath him.

Something resembling a smirk crosses his features and Metaari turns his head slightly to gaze up at him. ]

'f you wanted to get m'shirt off, y'could've just asked.

[ Now is not the time. ]

Don't make me hit you in your weakened state.

[ Merrick is so anxious his hands are shaking, but he ignores it by keeping himself busy. Metaari is strong, he tells himself. He can fight this. It'll be fine. He takes a dampened cloth and gently dabs Metaari's face with it. ]

[ His face instinctively turns toward the gentle touch, his eyes falling closed again as he lets out a faint sigh. It's so relaxing and feels like it helps--not that he needs help, of course. Because he's not sick. ]

You've got such a gentle touch.

[ The words are quiet, almost far away. ]

Wouldn't think it.

"Good." He doesn't think he can make the walk, right now, but later. Later he will try to stand. "He has not been about much today? He might be ill. Marvelous."

When she can't steady the cup, he supports it.

"It's all right," he says gently. "There's a lot going on right now. I have the cup if you'd like, take sips as you want." She needs extra care, but that's not a bad thing. She is how she was born.

"Would you mind if I checked your forehead for fever?"

"Cole, have you noticed anything else different? Not for others, but for yourself?" He didn't think that the spirit could possibly catch or get whatever they had, but considering he was physically here... It was certainly possible. Something they needed to know for sure.

'And then you stayed...' It is a comment leading on towards a clear question that isn't quite being asked.
justice_is_blond: (Let me catch my breath)

Contaminated food can spread easily... but it doesn't entirely fit. Air or water fit more. He'll put more work into this; it has to be something that can be figured out, and soon.

"No, that could be... Perhaps not relevant to the disease that's going around, but it could be useful knowledge about the place itself. Or maybe it is related. If more than usual can see spirits and demons..." He doesn't like the idea of the disease being magical, though. There's already enough stigma mages have to face. If this has magic roots, it could set them back yet again. But there's also nothing to do about it save keep working and make sure they don't lose anyone to this.

"Would you like something with which to pin your hair back while you rest?" She's not getting up at this point, he's pretty sure. And he's glad of it.

"Air only requires one person to be ill, and there are always merchants coming through." It's said quietly as he mentally adds her words to everything else and still doesn't get anywhere. "Except the latest group is currently caught here, which could mean they've brought something. ...Except they weren't brought in ill, and if they have something to do with it then at least one of them should have been showing symptoms by then."

Anders sighs and closes his eyes for a moment.

"Maker's breath. Someone said it might be magical but I don't want it to be magical. I don't want to have to fight against yet another mark against us, but nothing else is adding up. Unless someone brought in some contaminant, some bad food, or something, and it's only just spread through the food supply, but that's a long shot."

"I do." A beat. "Are you going to walk me down?"

That is- terribly gallant of Sam. He crackles a warm laugh, reaching up to squeeze his shoulder weakly. "Such a kind man you are, truly. I appreciate it."
justice_is_blond: (Bring it)

on both their sides, whoops. Gonna take some serious feastday gifts...

[personal profile] justice_is_blond 2016-04-29 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Blank anger. That's what he starts hearing. Noises and fury, and it's everything Justice is afraid of becoming. Everything Anders is afraid of becoming. He doesn't know how the man can deal with it. At least with Justice talking constantly there's an awareness of the divide between their opinions. Anders can't imagine it being an entirety of wordless moods. He'd never know what was him and what was the spirit... or demon, in this case.

'It is one difference of many,' Justice supplies, but Anders doesn't have the patience to really listen right now. He has his own rage to deal with - Bruce acting like Anders had forced his dreams on Bruce when all he'd wanted was to keep things to himself, to not show any times he'd been vulnerable, to not inspire others to think of ways to return him to that vulnerability.

'And you will not be that weak again so long as I am with you.' True and not. He's near impossible to kill, yes, but that's not all that strength means.

"You're ill, and at greater risk than anyone else here if the rumbling I'm getting is anything to go by. Sit. Rest a little. Before someone overhears that who has overheard Justice and wonders if there's something similar going on."

'Not similar. I am no-' For once, Anders cuts him off mentally. Neither of them can say for sure that Justice is not demonic at all, that he's not been compromised. In fact, it's more likely that he has been.
justice_is_blond: (Actually let's go with that idea)

[personal profile] justice_is_blond 2016-04-29 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely different than Sam and Fortitude. Sam's not possessed, and he wonders if she doesn't know the difference between Spirit Healer and abomination, and that a great majority aren't like him. He doesn't have time to really straighten things out, though, because she's decided she's talking to Hope and starts chattering away.

For a while she keeps his full attention. Hope isn't a threat, he doesn't think she can become possessed, but there's certainly something different happening here. Not a risk, exactly. He can't pin down why he's feeling so wary.

After that time, though, he turns to half-watching while working with herbs nearby. Whether or not Beleth feels she's learning something new isn't for him to say, but it's certainly interesting to watch her try this.
justice_is_blond: (Spider hunting is a sort of fun)

[personal profile] justice_is_blond 2016-04-29 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm." He considers the question she's asking and can't really recall what the answer might be. "How important is it that I answer accurately?"

Anders turns and gives her a half-smile. "I've gone longer with less, and with fewer reserves. I used to be the only healer for a large area of the poor and forgotten, which meant whenever the weather changed, there'd be a line hours and hours deep. This is fine."

Except he's out of practice when it comes to being up this long, and he's not used to also running a fever while working. Sleeping worries him, though. Dreams leak out, and his have never been pleasant, even before there was Grey Warden influence in them.

"Perhaps I could do with something to eat, though." A small compromise might not be a bad idea.
justice_is_blond: (Wouldn't that be something)

[personal profile] justice_is_blond 2016-04-29 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
He, however, was surprised. A smile and a squeeze of his shoulder were a very rare response to his name, and Solas gets a longer look of appraisal. In response, he actually does take a seat. Justice doesn't approve, but they'll be back to work soon enough.

"No one deserves to lose their freedom simply because of their birth. To bow to a system that bases its power on putting down two groups is, should be, unthinkable. But the majority have been taught fear for all of their lives, and fear and hate are what they know. What they thrive on. No matter how low life drags them, at least they're not a mage, at least they're not an elf. Maybe they can learn to look beyond this and see what comes from equality and actually working together."

He didn't have the highest of hopes for this happening, but that wasn't going to stop him from working. Nothing worthwhile was gained easily.

"What brought you back to Skyhold?"
bookish_lioness: (Are you sure about that?)

[personal profile] bookish_lioness 2016-04-29 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Just because you can last long without sleep doesn't mean you should," she scolds lightly, painfully aware that she's playing the part of the pot calling the kettle black. "Sit down for a few minutes and have something to eat. I can make some tea, if you'd like."

She isn't going to take no for an answer, and she proves as much when she takes Anders' arm, gently guiding him to sit. Glancing back at the cat he'd just been feeding, Hermione determines that it doesn't look bedraggled enough to be a proper stray, and so must have been at Skyhold for a while now. "After all, you won't be of much help to your patients or your little friend there if you don't have the strength to remain upright."
bookish_lioness: (This could be just what we need!)

[personal profile] bookish_lioness 2016-04-29 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hermione would argue that she's very much not sick. She's just a little dazed from the cold. Or the heat. Is it possible to be both too cold and too warm? Because she's beginning to feel that way, though she simply attributes it to being out in the cold rain and experiencing more physical contact than she's usually used to.

"My best friend," she murmurs, trying to stand on her own without relying on Sam to hold her up. "Closest to a brother I-... but he's much shorter and slimmer than you, and has glasses, so I don't know why...." As she begins to move in whatever direction Sam decides to guide her in, Hermione finds herself chuckling softly. "If I marry Ron and Harry marries Ginny, he really will be my brother. I never thought of that."
bookish_lioness: (W/ Harry- no one said this would be easy)

[personal profile] bookish_lioness 2016-04-29 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hermione isn't exactly of a mind to be impressed by any show of stamina - or pure stubbornness - Korrin chooses to show off. She's sort of surprised she hasn't fallen herself, though when she sees what looks like the healing tents looming up ahead, she does her best to walk faster without increasing her chances of taking a tumble and taking Korrin along with her.

"I don't mind being with you," she tells her simply. "You're my friend. If you need someone to be there for you, that's what friends are for."

"I may die."

It seems unlikely, if she's capable of asserting as much; she closes her eyes again, since it seems her poor mood is unlikely to run Teren off, and maybe she can just go back to sleep and be tended to without ever being cornered into any kind of conversation in this vulnerable state.

That seems unlikely. She would absolutely take advantage, in Teren's position.
tactical_alert: (hmm?)

He wonders sometimes if it's just something most Seekers have in common. That they've formed a way of speaking that makes their meaning clear to one another but invites ridicule from those outside. Malcolm and Cassandra and Aleron all seem to understand one another perfectly fine, after all.

Still, that he is to be called handsome by her catches him off-guard. He's never considered the likes of Cassandra in any way other than a strictly professional--if friendly--relationship. So. Obviously it's just her trying to cover for inadvertently saying he looks ill. Obviously. She would never--

Hm. Maybe he should just ignore it as she did. That might be the safer and less embarrassing for the both of them. Still, doesn't keep him from staring for a moment longer and clearing his throat. "Far from it, of course. Just occasionally seeing spirits hanging around everyone. I just hope you're getting adequate rest when you're not under scrutiny. Maker forbid you collapse from pushing yourself too hard when it isn't called for."

He motions to the plate. "Which you have a habit of doing." Pot, meet kettle... "Hence making sure you do eat adequately. You would scarcely believe how busy the kitchen is, though. We'll be burning through quite a few of our herbs and meats and potatoes just throwing together so much tea and stew. And then the cooks complain that some ingredients are going missing or ending up in the oddest of places... But, those are things to consider once this illness has passed and our roads are cleared. For now we can only take care of our own and be glad to be able to do that much."

[personal profile] sistertohermen 2016-04-29 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then maybe you should stop fighting what isn't really there before all this wet makes you catch ill." Oh, if only she knew. "Especially if you're aiming to exhaust yourself completely." Warriors. Honestly. All chipped from the same stone. "Get inside and sit."

She doesn't have any authority to be ordering anyone around, but her tone says she's not going to take no for an answer.
gatheringstorm: (can you not)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-04-29 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Korrin sighs, her expression grim. "Yeah. Mostly it's fear demons right now, drawn to people freaking out about all this. But there are other kinds, too. Despair, Rage, Pride...they can't do anything to us, not when they're on the wrong side of the Veil, but it's still damn annoying. Don't listen to those, all they want is to undermine us."
gatheringstorm: (um....)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-04-29 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Those few moments have Korrin distracted again as she glares at chattering spirits wandering the tavern, curious about everything and everyone. She nearly throws a tankard at them, but Jamie's voice distracts her just in time. "You arrived on the moon...by accident. Seriously? What the fuck, Jamie.

...wait, what happened the second time?" There's a nagging irritation in the back of her mind, knowing that it's likely she'll retain so little of this later that she'll have to ask for the story again. Oh, well. At this point, it's less about the tale involved and more about focusing on something other than feeling like utter crap.
sistertohermen: (Default)

[personal profile] sistertohermen 2016-04-29 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
She doesn't want to admit to weakness (the whole being terrified out of her mind thing), but she isn't going to lie and say she's fine. "The only times dwarves see...weird visions, I guess you could say is when some of the miner caste starts suffering from lyrium poisoning. They start going mad. It's the closest anyone gets to seeing spirits or entering the Fade. So...yeah. It's weird. And even though I know other people can see them now, too, I still feel like I'm going crazy. I don't know what it means. Dwarves can't...they just can't. Everyone knows that."
gatheringstorm: (so drunk)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-04-29 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, exactly." Korrin nods, sympathetic even as she can't quite comperehend what it must be like to be completely separate from the Fade. "At least they shut up if you focus on them, for whatever reason. Passive-aggressive shits. But even that gets old, after a while. So, my brilliant idea is find something strong enough to knock yourself out with, then you won't have to deal with them for a while. Gives the healers more time to focus on fixing this, too."
