Pine smells unnatural?

( Ruby asks, gently bewildered and looking up from checking her elemental mines to make sure they are all good and also not going to explode and do anything terrible at the wrong moment-- ) I grew up in a pine forest. Or, well, mostly pine.

( but Ruby you're also a werewolf and have suffered multiple curses so... )

[ Humans weren't usually anymore the wood type than her. Unless they're some crazy witch of the woods...

Well, no. ( She laughs a little bit. ) It was a little village, but surrounded by the forest. I spent a lot of time in there - hunting, playing games, taking shortcuts I wasn't supposed to take...

( Ruby offers a bit of a grin. ) Actually, I probably did get lost a couple of times, but my Granny gave me hell for it.

Well, 'least your own now.

[And in the middle of a demon war...but hey. Not in a tiny village in the woods. That's something.]

But you're the rift-closer, yeah? Sparkly hand and all?

True. It could be worse. Although, I will say for forests that they are great for hiding in when you're on the run.

( A shrug, because she said that very casually and with a bit of a self-mocking grin. )

That's me, yeah. "Ruby" is a little shorter than "rift-closer" though, if you'd rather use that. ( And she holds up her hand, although it's gloved in red leather, so it's a bit pointless. ) Here to help.

[ She'd seen the Herald close a bunch, but she'd been a special woman. All these random people? Could only wait and see. But she says it with a smile. ]

What're you off running from?

Nice to meet you, Sera. ( So genuine, and so bright and cheery. ) I'm more of an archery girl, too. Swords, so overrated.

( Just gently conspiratorial, there. )

At the time I was helping my friend run away from the Queen. She'd murdered Snow's father and usurped the throne, and was sort of terrorising the whole land. It... was an experience.

Ha! Rebel woods, were they? Alright, suppose those can do some good. Noble folks don't like getting their boots all muddy either. 'Cept...makes your friend a future Queen, don't it?

Definitely bandit hiding woods, at any rate. And Snow's the current Queen, these days, technically. I try not to hold it against her. ( Said with cheery good humour. )

I mean, not all queens are prepared to get their hands dirty and try so hard to protect their people.

[ She sounds deeply doubtful, though]

But all that power and shit puts weird ideas in people's heads.

Here and there, ( She agrees. ) I think Snow's a better leader for having lived amongst her people for while though, you know? She really cares. They protected her, and she does everything she can to protect them.

( Ruby huffs a quiet sound that isn't really a laugh, is a little too thoughtful for it. ) She would have given up her claim on the throne to protect them. She did, really, until David talked her 'round.

( Even so: ) But you're right. A lot of people and power... yikes.
