Open | Building Plot

WHO: The Inquisition
WHAT: Building!
WHEN: 28th of Cloudreach, through the first week of Bloomingtide
WHERE: The river valley below Skyhold
NOTES: See here for details.

Welcome to the Great Building Project of 9:42, Dragon! So you've come to help construct some living structures and barracks? Excellent, there are several areas in which everyone's help is needed.

Clearing

The Mage Council themselves have dedicated themselves to clearing out the valley, and flattening it as well, so buildings can be constructed. They'll need all the magical help they can get, honestly, and even that will include people to help clear away the wood to be used for building, as well as the stone and other materials. It will be a lot of heavy lifting, carrying, or being able to drive a cart.

Building

Of course there is the building. Holding up walls, hammer and nails, thatch on the roofs, cutting out awkward window where necessary. Putting together fireplaces and firepits. The deft of hand and light of feet are the ones who can climb the roofs, move around without any problems to haul up sod and other things to plug the holes on the roof to make for a snug small hut, or a long and clean barrack hall.

Healing

And of course, there are accidents. Someone accidentally hammers their own hand, falls off a roof, gets a splinter in their finger. The healers themselves are going to need fresh water and herbs brought in, as well as food brought to keep them going.

Fetching/Carrying

Messages need to be brought back and forth between the builders. Water needs to be brought to the thirsty, as well as food. There are a million little things that need to be done to complete this great endeavor, so feel free to help out whatever little way you feel you can.

Katniss

Katniss is everywhere.

There's not a place you won't see the slender young woman, dark hair pulled back in a braid that is coming out in wisps. Dirt smudges her face and hands, but there's a faint smile on her face and no matter what she's doing, she's humming softly. At her heel is the wolf pup, who trots along beside her faithfully, and stands guard while Katniss is up atop a roof, hammering.

She's carrying water to give to people who are building, as well as food. Lifting bundles of stick and rock out of the way, or walking with a builder, murmuring softly over the plans.

Need to talk to her? Just snag her. She'll be glad to stop and talk to anyone who is helping out here.

Kain walks and jumps along those rooftops like he belongs there, confident and without a care. Dragoons don't fall, they land. There's that and the fact that these roofs aren't anything to someone like him, barely what he'd consider 'high'. He glances down toward Korrin. As he notices she's at work with her magic, he can only think of one way to retort...

"I could say the same of you!"

Korrin laughs, creating a walkway right by Kain for him to leap off from as he chooses. "Yeah, but they're used to my shit! Mages energizing things isn't anything new around here. But a guy leaping that high in full armor...." Well, if they hadn't seen him at work before, they have now.

“I guess I forget what a novelty it still is for many of them…” He has yet to meet anyone else who can do this sort of thing, after all. There are plenty of others, mages, shapeshifters, that he’s met from elsewhere, but the dragoon thing seems pretty unique. All the better really.

He heads toward that walkway, then does an impressive leap off, flipping dramatically before coming down for a solid landing on his feet. Ok, so maybe he enjoys showing off. It’s the one area of his life he fully feels confident in.

To be fair, not everyone's used to the magic and energizing items, as some newer recruits not having been exposed to that form of repairing before end up staring. But Kain gets an equal amount of that, and they murmur about magic and rifters to themselves. Approaching them doesn't happen, but Korrin doesn't care.

"Not bad. If we have a jumping contest, you'd win, hands down."

"It would almost be too unfair to those who don't have this sort of power..." Kain says with amusement. He's always taken pride in his abilities, after all, so in a way he really enjoys impressing others with it. True, he's still unfond of being singled out as a rifter, being looked at oddly because of that. But that's usually for what he is. He enjoys being recognized instead for what he does.

"You can't teach it any more than I could teach you magic, I assume. A pity. Not that I don't have enough to focus on, anyway." Between Knight-Enchanter drills and learning more rift magic, Korrin is a busy, busy mage. There's no time for stuff better suited to actual warriors.

Kain nods. “Unfortunately not… it’s far too much of a dragoon skill. Even back home, our fighting styles are pretty set in stone, the same as for you. A mage cannot be a warrior, nor a warrior a mage.” It’s for the best that way, though, so they can all focus on their specializations and be experts in them. “Tell me about it, though. Training in a new skill takes a great deal of time and effort…” He hadn’t ever seen himself learning new skills like that, but the whole Reaver thing had caught his interest in a surprising way.
gatheringstorm: (curious)

"And Asher as a teacher? How does he compare to those you left behind? I find it hard to imagine they were anything close to his brand of 'fucking crazy'." Kain knows of her friendship with Asher by now, so she's not going to bother clarifying that her description is as affectionate as it is accurate. Besides, all Reavers are 'fucking crazy', as far as she's concerned. They have to be, to walk that path.

“Not as crazy as I’ve been told, or perhaps I’m starting to get used to him.” That or Kain may just be a bit on the not-so-sane side himself. He takes a lot of the weirdness for just the Reaver way of things. So, yes, maybe Korrin is onto something here… “I’m glad I figured out this as a path, though. It’s keeping me occupied, setting me to this as a purpose while we’re waiting our next command.” Sure, the illness had distracted him for a little while, but outside of that, he’s always so restless without some mission to go on. These in between times are rough, good thing jobs like this one come up every so often.

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-05-10 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Korrin nods, understanding that sentiment well. "I know what you mean. It's coming, I'm sure, but just standing around and waiting isn't my style. So I'm learning more specialized magic that might help us out on the battlefield. Rift mages draw upon the power of the Fade, and when we have rifts everywhere, it seems like that could only help us, you know? And I'm still working on Knight-Enchanter stuff, as well."
dragoon_pride: (eye of the storm)

[personal profile] dragoon_pride 2016-05-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't blame you... I suppose that would be a good way to deal with all of this... this Rift-stuff. The more we can learn to truly deal with it, the better." It's a mage thing, or at least that's how Kain would prefer it to be. Of course, he has his own rift-sealing power right in his left hand, though he still isn't fond of having such a thing as a part of him. "I'm looking forward to seeing how this new power will work in relation to my regular one."
gatheringstorm: (anchor)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-05-12 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd show you here, but there's still work to be done...and I doubt people would react well if I summoned a rock from the Fade to slam into something. We're just at the point where people don't fuss if we use our skills to help build and repair, I'd rather not destroy that goodwill." It's still annoying that they had to walk on eggshells in the first place, but Adelaide's right. Things are getting better.
dragoon_pride: (moody and broody)

[personal profile] dragoon_pride 2016-05-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
“Of course. I wouldn’t want to undo what’s already been built, after all. We’ll have to find a place to show off our new combat skills to each other, in that case…” Kain is looking forward to doing more. He knows the true test of those abilities will be when he actually gets out to a real battle, but even before that, he’ll take any excuse he can to use them. “I’m glad to hear that people aren’t making such a fuss about you using your magic, though.”
gatheringstorm: (mod 13)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-05-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"It helps that this benefits them, makes the day pass a lot faster. I always figured that if you can't appeal to people's morality, appeal to practicality. One or the other tends to come through. Though if I were tossing fireballs around, it'd be a different story. Even the more lenient ones don't want to be anywhere near that shit." And honestly, Korrin can't blame them. Magic to non-magics, especially battle-magic, must be terrifying.
dragoon_pride: (the skies are merciless)

[personal profile] dragoon_pride 2016-05-15 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd hope they'd learn eventually just how useful it is to have someone capable of shooting fireballs on their side... But you're right, about being practical. Sometimes, that's the only way anyone will listen..." Kain is all for being realistic as much as possible about things, and he'd hope that if and when it came to the world's survival, more people would be able to get along with magic. It was never a question back home or in the war, and sometimes he still finds this world's views so strange.
gatheringstorm: (half-smile)

[personal profile] gatheringstorm 2016-05-15 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Believe me, I feel the same way. They don't have to love battle magic, just not freak out when it's being used from their side. But, I'll take any form of progress, you know?" It's annoying, to take comfort in so little progress, but Korrin's seen what people forcing their hand accomplishes, and wants no part of that.
dragoon_pride: (calm in the eye of the storm)

[personal profile] dragoon_pride 2016-05-17 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
“Right. And that does sound promising, given what I’ve seen and learned about this world… Tolerance of any sort is a step in the right direction.” Kain hopes that’s something that’ll continue. There are more important things to deal with, and the in-fighting has to stop. “We have a true enemy to face, all together, after all…”
