"Wait-- wait, wait, wait, you get sent away from your family? How is that fair? That's your family, you should get to stay with them until you're old enough to make the decision to go." Asher your abandonment issues are showing, put them away. And that was at fifteen when he'd kind of never been wanted, ah dragon age parenting scenarios, delightful. "So, in a hold a woman sings a song and a man gets a length of rope with knots tied in it and he has the length of the song to untie as many knots as he can. The number of knots he unties by the end of the song marks the number of years they're married for. Decent enough system but even that's too much being tied down. Better uses for rope if you get me."

Do you Merrill. Do you get him?

"You know if you want a hand with that thing, I'm mostly healed up now." As in he's not going to bleed everywhere because that generally ruins the mood.

"The Dalish have never been used to fairness." The entire world won't show it, and so they cannot afford to wait, not when someone might not want to go. Learning about his culture is a better distraction, though. "Is there a specific song? I mean, you could sing a song that only lasts thirty seconds if you really didn't want to stay with them. And then you'd have lots of rope for other things!"

She gets you, Asher.

"I've- um, I've never even done anything without rope. With someone else, that is."

"Don't think many elves are." That's all he can actually say since he's human, and a big loud human, and he learned a long time ago to keep his mouth shut unless asked by Melisende or Liadan if elf things come up. "We have so many songs, I mean we battle with verse. On the shoulders of our friends. That's an actual thing that happens fairly regularly to settle matters - our singers our important to the hold but there are songs for marriage. And well, someone might die on a hunt. Or they'll get sick. Take a wound on a raid. A clan lives as wild as us." So she knows how it goes, that people die all the time and that life goes on, that you mourn, but that no matter how terrible it might be? The world still moves on.

He learned that after Kirkwall and the grief that nearly crushed the natives in the crew.

"What, really?" Merrill the things he could teach you. He is a man of the world. Also a man of the world that really likes being told what to do but really a man of the world so whatever.

The world moves on, often as if you were never in it. It can be hard, but- you have to keep moving. It's what your friends would want. (She tells herself this a lot, thinking about Hawke. She has no idea it'll apply to Asher too, but she'll remember this conversation when it does.)

"Really. I think most people are terrified Varric will shoot them." Which is ridiculous -- he'd only threaten to shoot them, and maybe not even that. "If nothing else- I wouldn't mind trying your gift out with you."

(Guys like Asher never last but at least you get plenty of great and inappropriate stories to tell, especially about sex-related concussion incidents to appall young people just trying to have dinner.)

"He's not even Carta, they're the ones you worry about, and I live with two." Please don't go near them Merrill because they look perfectly harmless but they're both shits and Asher sometimes wants to cheerfully drown them. Actually he wants to cheerfully drown them most days before dinner and then usually after as well if they're being obnoxious but that's family for you. "Tell you what, soon as I can bend without groaning like a dying man, you'll be the first to get to put me through my paces."

Because honestly he's about as menacing as a kitten right now and he can barely even sit comfortably for two minutes it's terrible.

"I think he would say the chest hair intimidates people," Merrill laughs. In reality it's probably his crossbow and his ties to just about every criminal organization that's ever touched Kirkwall, but the chest hair is quite something.

Still, he's going to take her up on it and Merrill beams. "Well, then you'd better go and rest! You have to heal up." Otherwise she's going to try out healing vagina and no one wants that. In the meantime, though, she'll happily bounce up to kiss Asher on the cheek.

"Thank you again. Really."
