Step one: Grind the elfroot into a paste...

WHO: Adelaide & Whoever wants to attend
WHAT: Potions & Poultices 101
WHEN: Harvestmere 28, morning
WHERE: The Garden
NOTES: As advertised the day before.

Set Up

As promised Adelaide had a large kettle brewing of a simple black tea. It wasn't much but it was hot and it was bitter- sugar, honey, and cream weren't exactly in ample supply but there were a few jars of donated jam and honeycomb donated by the kitchens and patients. Her own supplies for potions and poultices are laid out on a makeshift table. To one side her apprentices finish writing out and folding instructions- basic recipes for healing poultices, salves, potions- and the principles behind simple healing spells. If you could throw a fireball, you could heal a cut. Anything more complicated took greater study but the basics? Should be well known.

Behind and looking somewhat uncomfortable but, well, present, Bruce stood minding the bundles of herbs, handing out what was needed. While not a mage the surgeon was trustworthy and, honestly, needed to get out more.

During

It was simple enough. Adelaide went over the information on the cards handed out by her apprentices, demonstrated the proper techniques for grinding, mixing, layering the poultices and brewing for potions. They did not have as many kits for the brewing as they did for creating poultices, but they should have enough for those with an interest to learn or to help. After going through those Adealide would motion the mages that wished to learn more of basic healing off to one side to walk them through the theory, using some of the not quite so injured patients to demonstrate. Volunteers, all- she was careful in her instruction and thorough above all else- the last thing they needed was anyone getting injured from an attempt at healing.

After

Packing everything away in the afternoon to return to her tent, Adelaide was available for further questions, commentary- or criticism if something seemed poorly done, presumptuous, or overly curt.

Bruce still wasn't sure why he was here.

Sure, he knew how he was here, but that didn't really help him with dealing with this entire situation. There were so many people to handle, and all of this wasn't really something that he did.

Right now he was sorting out some of the herbs to be used later, categorizing them and placing them in their respective places to use later. At least doing this was much easier than having to deal with people.

He spotted Bruce and made his way over with a smile.

"Are you going to be teaching too?" Gavin asked, tilting his head to look at what Bruce was doing. "Apparently I'm invited, but I'm not sure whether that's terrific or terrifying."

amygdalae: (look what we've got here)

Bruce glanced up when he heard Gavin's familiar voice, and when he saw the elf broke into a small and obviously thankful smile.

"I really hope I'm not teaching," he returned, more wry than anything else as he continued to sort through the herbs. "I'm not very good with people. But I'm sure you'll be fine, though, so don't worry."

It was nice - to have people smile just by having him around, and Gavin happily enjoyed the little warm feeling in his chest that came from it.

"I don't know about that, I think you'd be a great teacher," Gavin said, 'helpfully' picking up one of the bundles of herbs and looking at it, before giving it a sniff and putting it back down. "Though I think I'd probably end up derailing your class fairly quickly... How's your face doing?" He asked out of no where, glancing up to get a good look.

amygdalae: but that plane is really not Starscream (yes I just said that)

"I'm pretty sure if I had to teach it would end pretty horribly." Bruce certainly couldn't imagine himself being able to deal with so many people at once, all at the same time. It wouldn't end in the worst disaster, per se, but Bruce would rather not risk it anyway.

When he inquired about the injury Bruce just shrugged and smiled, angling his head enough so that the elf would be able to see that the injury was totally gone. "It's all healed up now, don't worry." Pel had helped a little, but Bruce mostly had to heal up the rest of the damage himself with his magic. He usually wouldn't do it, but he didn't want her efforts to go to waste and he at least did have an excuse to cover this incident up.

"Good," Gavin said, once assuring himself it was true, before smiling fondly. "Worrying ceased, then."

His own bruises were still there, but much fainter, like the shadows of leaves cast across his face. "I don't see how it'd go all that bad," Gavin mused thoughtfully. "Maybe if you just tutored people one-on-one?"

amygdalae: I just choose not to say them (I have a lot of words)

The injuries hadn't healed on Gavin, clearly, but at least it was on the way to recovery and that was the important part. Recovering was always a good sign.

He thought about the suggestion for a bit before giving another shake of his head. "I suppose it could work, but..." he trailed off, glancing at the mages that had gathered here for the session. "Most would rather prefer to use their magic anyway, even though some people still fear it." But then again when you get desperate enough, you would take it anyway - so Bruce supposed that didn't matter so much.

"Well some of us can't use magic at all," Gavin pointed out, his tone a bit teasing, picking up one of the herbs. "You could always try to teach me, Bruce, though I think that would probably end with you wanting to shove my face into the dirt." He grinned, twirling the elfroot around between his fingers.

"I've been told I'm a terrible student."

amygdalae: that's a nice way to put it (my other self?)

He watched as Gavin toyed with a bit of elfroot, quirking a smile at the words. "I suppose I could give it a shot with somebody I already know. I promise that I won't shove your face anywhere." He's got some pretty good patience, and he knows that Gavin is honestly sincere in whatever he was trying to do. As long as he did want to put in the effort, then Bruce did not mind.

"Careful," Gavin grinned, "I'm going to hold you to that promise, and then you'll regret it."

He put the elfroot back. "I guess I should let you get back to work. You'll teach me, though? Honest?"

amygdalae: you sir are not impressing me (is that all you've got?)

[personal profile] amygdalae 2015-10-31 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've had worse regrets."

There's a smile there, and this one looks far more wry than it ought to be. Bruce has had many, many regrets in his life - teaching Gavin how to make things really wasn't anywhere near his list of worst things.

Still, he did his best to be reassuring. "I don't take back my word. When you're up for it come and tell me, and we can arrange for something."

"That sounds like a challenge," Gavin replied with a grin, before reaching over to pat Bruce's shoulder.

"I'll come find you later, then." He gave another grin, and then he was gone - off among the students to chat and pretend he was working.
