Maybe if this one fails too he can pin it on the location. Not that any of them will buy that, but hey, it's the same spot as the others. Maybe the veil's weird here. It was weird in Kirkwall.

And maybe he's just looking for excuses that aren't Justice when he already knows what the likely flaw is.

"Why can't you hold a chicken?" The look he gives Sam is slightly confused. "I've held plenty. They just take a little stillness and quiet talking, and they'll behave. ...Granted, it's easier when you raise them from egg, I've been told. But our neighboring farm raised them. Sold most. The few they didn't were rather tame."

But chickens don't have to be the end of things. Sam seems fairly well pleased by the kittens, and Anders scratches behind the ears of another. "I believe we may both know where you could find a few things that are very suited to being pets, however."

Sam chuckles at that. "Alright, technically you can hold a chicken. It's not something you can really play with or anything though. I mean you did look at me weird when I said I had a pet chicken. It's like that. It's not something you would really go for to handle even if they are tame. She's friendly enough, but besides feeding there isn't much interaction."

At the 'subtle' suggestion, Sam gives a small hum. Oh, Adelaide would just love that wouldn't she? "I wouldn't mind taking at least one of them ," he admits.

Adelaide would love the healer's tents being overrun by kittens. Trust him. Or maybe don't.

Anders reaches over and nudges one of the kittens, the one that's currently trying to hog Sam's hand the most. "This one seems interested. That, or it's simply a showoff. There's no telling until you've had one for a while. And if you take more than one, you make up for the lack of affection from your chicken for the children."

Cats are good for healing! Well the patients would probably enjoy having little balls of fur. Don't think that was going to really fly though.

Hogging is putting it lightly, the little thing is practically wrapped around his hand, meowing lightly when he tries to move away. "Are you trying to get me to take two kittens, Anders?" He's already going to say yes to the one that's interested/showing off.

"Why not?" He nudges the one he helped into Sam's lap, the one that seems more interested in the man's boots than his hand. "One for constant attention, one that keeps the other company when you're busy. Unless you're going to carry yours around the way I do Purrelden."

He doesn't think that's a very Sam thing.

Sam chuckles at that. "No, I wouldn't carry it around like you do." Course it was a very Sam thing to let something so small push him around and end up with it riding around on his shoulders because he couldn't say 'no'. Teaching it to follow him around maybe as well.

"Well it would probably be more fair to see if someone else wants a kitten first. I also have to keep my roommate in mind." Don't tempt him Anders. If he didn't put his foot down he'd probably end up with the whole litter.

"There are more kittens." He gestures to their couple of littermates that have been scooped up. "There are other cats in Skyhold, too. What roommate can mind just two cats? Far better that you have two than having a single one who is lonely and gets loud after being lonely for some time."

He's a cat salesman. Hopefully Sam would be doomed. "Two cats. Two friends. And two earwarmers on cold nights."

Well shit, he really doesn't have an argument against that. Honestly one is enough, but at considering that it will probably get lonely when he isn't around - and Kirk wasn't around all the time either - he does have to consider it. Especially with the two of them now battling with each other, which was more of them nipping and then curling up together.

"... How come you only have Purrelden then?" Last line of defense here.

"My lover is a dog lord. I've some work to go yet before I can have a second cat." More like Anders doesn't want to push his luck. Somehow someone loves an abomination. Why would Anders risk annoying Nate? The archer isn't fickle, but Anders has lived so much of his life in fear.

"Beyond that, I carry Purrelden in her little pouch with me nearly everywhere. She's rarely lonely."

"I take it flashing your ankles wouldn't work, huh?" His lips curl just a bit upward at remembering that conversation. There's a moment that Sam wants to point out that he's a 'dog lord', but stops considering he was that dog lord who was adopting a cat. Not that he cared, but obviously some people were going to say stuff. Asher, probably Asher. And Christine.

Course Anders also had a point that he kept the cat with him at all times, which still sounds dangerous. Sam's lips purse a bit, because that is literally the end of reasons why he cannot have more than one.

His eyes sparkle despite the stress, and Anders gives the kitten poking at bootlaces a little poke so it rolls onto its back, letting him pet its tummy... and get his finger gnawed on.

"He's seen so very much more of me than my ankles at this point. They don't have enough of an effect. But don't worry. I'm working on it. Including with the showing." He's... pretty sure he's won at this point. Sam's not just going to adopt one cat. Hopefully he sees how adorable the boot-attacker is, because otherwise Anders will have to find a home just for that little one. It's the playful ones that tend to get hurt most often when they don't have an owner.

You clearly fell into it's clever trap, Anders. Serves you right.

It's not that Sam doesn't see how adorable that particular one is, they're all rather cute, but honestly he hadn't come today with the plans of adopting a kitten. Or two. Sam sighs at that, his hand reaching down and scratching the head of the one not currently gnawing on Anders. Kirk was going to just love this when they got back.
