It had been a surprise when he heard that Christine's birthday was today and he hadn't known about it. Well, he supposed it wasn't that surprising considering his own would have gone without notice if it weren't for a certain group of templars. Regardless, Sam knew about it now, which meant he needed to do something for it.

Christine had made him a pie for when his name day had come and gone, so it seemed only fitting that Sam would try his hand at making something for her - a cake. Even if his forte was not in baking/cooking he knew enough to at least know his way around the kitchen and to follow a recipe. He didn't know what kind of cake Christine actually liked, but something with fruit and lots of cream sounded like the standard for Orlesian desserts.

"Let's see... flour, eggs, water, sugar-"

maybe sam needs some chill ever think of that??? "Girls where I'm from totally like flowers, which is why I was wondering if she'd like them, y'know, in the future, maybe, at some point. Who knows what our cultures have in common. If I was feeling fancy, maybe I'd read up on the language of which flowers in which colors mean what." He is not that fancy. "But like...so flowers, and candles on cakes, those have survived, anyway."

He has enough chill for the both of you, so probably doesn't need more. "Right, for later on." Nice save Church. "Culture, huh? Afraid I don't know a lot of Orlesian culture to help you there." There weren't a whole lot of things that Thedas cultures shared, and candles and cakes were probably mostly shared by human races if that. "What do you do usually in your culture?"

"What, for birthdays? I mean...it depends, but besides cake and candles, there's presents. Sometimes a special trip somewhere fun." And he's pretty sure there's no Chuck E Cheese around here. "Nice dinner, maybe? Or also you could do nothing and not celebrate it."

First Church would have to explain what Chuck E. Cheese was, and then probably get a weird look - that's a place adults went to? "Well it doesn't sound like celebrating - or lack of celebrating - a birthday is relatively similar. For the most part at least. Hm. So I take it you celebrate your birthday in one of these ways?"

"I...guess? I don't think I've ever really celebrated mine. Not, uh, since I was a kid." At least, from those memories he always thought were his but probably actually aren't. He knows for certain he hasn't bothered while at Blood Gulch, and when you're alone on a base for over a year, there's no real reason to do anything. "Do you bother doing anything for yours?"

"My dad and aunt would celebrate it every year when I was a child and a young boy. When I was put in the Circle there wasn't a celebration, perhaps a few good words and a pat on the back. Norrington and the others did spoil me a bit and snuck me some treat. I had gotten used to that, so when it came around this year I was merely going to spend the day resting, not bring much attention to it. It got found out those and everyone threw me a small party. I got some gifts... Christine baked me a pie which I helped with, so making her a cake seemed fitting."
