The plan is simple enough, on paper.

Lord Livius Erimond, locked in Skyhold's dungeon since his capture, finally cracks when he learns that the Grey Wardens have moved on and no one is coming to negotiate for his release. There's no mind-control driving the sacrifices, he says, only fear. Corypheus has an arrangement with a demon to amplify it and extend the reach of the song that's driving the Wardens to desperation. Handle it, and maybe they'll see that they're being manipulated.

In practice, it's a little fuzzier. Some guesswork. Some optimism. Approximating the demon's location takes time and effort from the Fade-fluent. There's a rift nearby, but it's small, nondescript. Making it bigger, drawing attention and drawing the demon out onto solid ground where it can be fought, calls for every anchor shard on hand, mages and Templars to assist, archers and swordsmen at the ready. The Herald did it before, at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. It's feasible. Just wiggle your fingers, and--

--and the sky opens up wide, then wider, too wide, green light flooding out like water finally cresting over a bank, and the ground beneath your feet turns from sand to stone. In some places it becomes vertical. In others it stops existing at all. The rift sprawls and spiders out with almost sentient aim, encompassing everyone it can reach. It takes two seconds, maybe three.

Then it closes.

I. THE NIGHTMARE

The good news is: the Inquisition pinpointed the Nightmare's location correctly. The bad news is: the Inquisition pinpointed the Nightmare's location correctly.

So if you find a second to to wonder where you are, there are two possible answers. The first is the raw Fade, where few have trod since the ancient magisters entered the Golden City and began the Blight. The City is Black now and it hangs in the distance, always on the horizon, always visible, but never within reach. The light is sickly green and seems to come from everywhere and nowhere, creating shadows from any and all directions. What direction is up and what direction is sideways is open for debate anyway. The ground--if it can be called that when it is only sometimes below you--is dark and rough, all crags and cliffs and spires. It's wet, too, with puddles and stagnant streams wound through the rock.

The second possible answer to the question of where, and the one that might warrant even more attention than the first, is right on top of a damn demon.

The Nightmare is massive, as large as a small fort. It has a dozen legs and at least twice as many eyes; a warm, civilly sinister voice that knows your deepest and darkest fears; and a seemingly endless supply of minions. Terror demons spring out of the ground around you with creaking screams. Fearlings take the shape of your simpler phobias: here a spider, there a snake, or roaring flames, a lyrium-encrusted Templar. Fighting through the flood of demons and bringing down the Nightmare will take every sword, every staff, and several hours. Pick a leg.

And when it's over--when the Nightmare is dead and only straggling Fearlings and occasional Terrors present an immediate threat--try to figure out what's next.

II. SEARCHING

Attempts to tear a new hole in the Veil from the inside will produce no results. But those sensitive to the Fade may be able to feel something--not quite like a draft guiding you out of a cave, but there's no closer analogy in the common tongue. A faint whiff of reality, somewhere in the distance, straight away from the distant Black City. There's no sunrise or sunset, and an hour can feel like a day or feel like a minute, but time is passing, and the walk is long by any measure.

While it's in your best interest to stay with the rest of the Inquisition's forces, this region of the Fade is a twisty, treacherous thing that seems to actively conspire to separate and mislead its visitors. More Fearlings slither out of crevices to menace anyone who lingers alone or tries to sleep. There's a marshy expanse that does its best to trap feet, and a field of memorial stones with the names of visitors etched into their surfaces, each with a cause of death marked below. Everywhere you step the ground is littered with evidence of terrible dreams, worked into the landscape like they were there first and it has grown up around them. There are skeletons in the stone, rock formations that twist into the shape of gallows, lost toys underfoot, an entire home tucked down a winding path, achingly empty.

III. ESCAPE

The Nightmare is dead, but its absence creates new reasons to fear. It begins slowly, things crumbling: the edge of a stair giving way unexpectedly, a towering hunk of rock a ways off collapsing upward into the open air and reforming there. The path rearranges as it's walked and takes wanderers in different directions, leaving them to fight their ways back to the main group. It was the concentration of fear and willpower embodied in the Nightmare that held this domain of the Fade intact, and without it, there's a power vacuum to fill. The spirits drawn here are drawn by lingering fear, and warped by it.

The forms they take may not be those you're familiar with from outside the Fade--less deformed, more malleable, more insidious, the things you most or least want to see. Those who long for safety may find a gentle Desire demon willing to offer it. Those whose fears stem from insecurities may hear the whispers of lurking Envy, mimicking their voices from its hiding place, cautiously testing for a foothold. If fear only pisses you off, be prepared to face your Rage. And if you refuse to be afraid--if you have this under control, if you know you'll be all right--a smiling embodiment of Pride may appear to praise your prowess and ask you to put those skills to other uses.

Whatever form your demons take, they are distractions from the larger issue: this part of the Fade is collapsing, unstable, and not meant for creatures like you to survive in. As important as it is to face your fears, it may in the end be more important to run from them. Regroup, keep moving, take head counts. There's a rift ahead, small enough to slip through one at a time, out into the desert, with its bright sun and relatively solid ground--and however long it feels like you've been walking, days or weeks, Adamant Fortress is visible across the sand.

Bethany gripped her hand, as the demon started to move against her will, and lifted up her staff ... just enough to freeze him into brittleness. She exhaled, sweat beading on her brow as she walked up to the creature, glowered at it, and then smashed her staff against the frozen icicle, shattering it in half.

Then she turned back to Ellana, offering her her arm. "Don't go too far from my side, or one of the other's who is in better shape. You're too wounded to go off alone..."

Taking small steps, Ellana reaches Bethany's side and places her staff on her back so she can keep one arm over her wound and take Bethany's arm with the other.

"Thank you. I'm so grateful." She closes her eyes for a brief moment, trying to center herself and get past the pain that's flaring up again. "The healers did what they could, but there's too much damage. Once we're all out, then I can get it healed properly." She swallows, mouth still so parched. "If we get in trouble, I'll go hide. I won't let you get hurt on my account."

Bethany gives her a warm, encouraging smile, as she starts to walk them to where she feels the open air of the real world.

She makes a face, but nods her head. "I understand. If the wounds start to open again, let me know. I know enough battlefield healing to keep you going until we get out of here."

A shake of her head. "Just stand behind me, I'll shield us both. I don't want anything dragging you off when I'm not looking. Felix would never forgive me."

"Oh, you do? That's a relief. I don't know any." One of the many areas where her magical knowledge is lacking, and yet the most necessary at times like these.

The mention of Felix's name suddenly has her heart dropping like a lead weight. She sucks in a sharp breath, trying not to cry.

"He doesn't even know we're here. He's so far away..." She shakes her head, trying to stay calm. "When I thought I was dying, all I could think was 'who's going to tell him?' Wouldn't that be an awful task? I wouldn't want to put that on anyone."

"Trust me, it was necessary when I followed after my sister and brother. They tended to get into more scrapes then out of them." She paused at the look on Ellana's face, before she spoke more firmly.

"That's nothing that we're going to have to worry about, Ellana. Because we are both getting out of here, and the only message that Felix is going to get is that you are alive, and well, and waiting for him to put his arms around you once more."

"They were lucky to have you looking after them," she says, feeling a slight pang over the fact she doesn't have any siblings of her own. It might surprise some people, but she's never thought of the clan as her family. They were all people she grew up around, and some were more instrumental in her upbringing after the death of her parents, but she's always made the distinction between clan and family.

Bethany's words are so needed right now, and Ellana gives a weak nod of her head. "You're right. Of course. We can feel the way out. It's just a matter of getting there. It's not that far, is it? It doesn't feel so far anymore."
sunshinethroughgrey: (Little Smile)

"I was lucky to have them looking out for me - it wasn't easy, being the youngest and a mage besides." She sighed, heavily, putting one hand over her own heart. She missed Carver and Marian like breathing. She had the Wardens, her other family -- but it wasn't the same. It was never the same - except for Nathaniel, and Anders.

But Anders was part of Kirkwall, of Marian, and thus ... was family whether he wanted to be or not.

She gave a firmer nod to Ellana. "You know I am. And no, we're not far at all." She smiled warmly, "You just tell me when you need to rest."

"I know I shouldn't push myself," Ellana admits, "But I want out so badly." She looks ahead and releases a soft sigh. "I'll let you know. If I don't, then I may be too hurt to go on anyway. At least this way, I know we'll get there eventually." She gives Bethany a slight smile. "You were so brave against that desire demon. They're always the ones who try to tempt me in dreams. Do you find that's the case with you? I'm not sure if that's common or not."
sunshinethroughgrey: (Charming dimples)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-03 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"You absolutely shouldn't push yourself beyond your limits." Bethany stated firmly, "Luckily, we have big strong people to help carry if you if you do, though."

Her lips quirk up, "I suppose it helps that I know precisely where my desires are - Carver is safe in the Free Marches, Marian is in hiding and - " She clears her throat, her cheeks flushed, "Well, let's just say some of my desires are close at hand."

"Oh?" she asks, recognizing some of herself in the way Bethany is acting now. The blush is a dead giveaway, just as it is with Ellana.

"Then I'm happy for you, Bethany. You deserve that kind of happiness." She pauses, before adding in a softer tone, "You are talking about romance, right?"
sunshinethroughgrey: (Pretty Mage Girl)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-04 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Och, don't be happy for me." She laughed, the blush deepening as she looked sheepish. "He ... well. He's a friend. A good friend, but not someone who is, ah, ready for romance. It's sort of all ridiculously hopeless on my part."

She paused then laughed again, something that did unpleasant things to the Nightmare. "Oh Maker, I am one of Varric's books! Or I should be."

"I wouldn't say that," Ellana says, never one to want to lose hope. "There may come a day when he realizes he is." And she has to agree with Bethany's realization, exhaling a soft laugh.

"The best romances are the ones where the lovers are kept apart by circumstance until the time is right. That makes it all worth it in the end." Her gaze shifts and she gives her head a slight shake. "I can't believe we're talking about this in this place. But maybe the good feelings are keeping the demons at bay?"
sunshinethroughgrey: (Oh you!)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-05 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I hope so, and shall continue to." For ... she has no idea how long she'll feel this way about Aleron. She has a terrible feeling it is going to be for quite a long time.

"Well, there are a lot of circumstances working against me, so I suppose I should be grateful I've gotten to him being my friend at all." She dimples, before she looks around with a faintly pleased look. "Good. I'll continue to laugh in the face of danger then."
serannas: amused (vir sumeil)

[personal profile] serannas 2016-06-05 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ellana is curious to know what those circumstances might be. Perhaps the fact she's a Warden, or a mage? But she doesn't want to pry, and this is about staying positive and happy so nothing comes after them as they escape the Fade. They're almost there.

"When we get out of here and I've recovered, I want you to point out this mystery man to me, so I can see if he's good enough for you."
sunshinethroughgrey: (Oh you!)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-05 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only if you do not ask me to point him out when we're around Varric, or Anders, or Isabela, or Aveline ... actually anyone in my family. Definitely not Alistair." Maker, the teasing she'd get from Alstair.

"I'll wait until it's just you and me," Ellana says, voice sounding as amused as it can be with the current circumstances being what they are. Up ahead, the light from the tear in a Fade is like a beacon, urging them to move forward towards safety. She feels like she already has the fresh air of their world brushing against her skin.

"Is anything behind us? Are we good to go through without anything following?"
sunshinethroughgrey: (Hawke Determination)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-07 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"I greatly appreciate that, and so does my blushing cheeks." Bethany stated with a faint smile. She looks ahead, brown eyes narrowing in thought.

She looked behind, "There are still more of us yet to come - I believe I will send you through and make sure everyone else gets out."

Ellana looks over at Bethany with a startled expression. The thought of staying here any longer than she has to is frightening, but then again, if she were well, she knows she would want to make sure everyone got out safe, even if she is afraid.

"That's very brave of you." But Wardens are always brave, aren't they? "I wish I could stay and help you with that."
sunshinethroughgrey: (Default)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-09 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
She gives the young woman an encouraging smile, and a squeeze of the arm. "Brave? Perhaps. But Wardens try not to leave a man behind, if it's at all possible. All I want from you -- is to get to the other side of that Rift and get some healing."
serannas: serious (12)

"That's a good philosophy to have." Ellana doesn't really know the specifics of Herc being left behind, but he's back now, and that's what matters.

She looks forward as they get closer to the rift. The swirling green mist surrounding it makes it appear dangerous, but there is fresh air coming through, and the knowledge that Ellana can finally lay down and be healed strengthens her resolve to reach it.

One foot in front of the other, again and again, finally get her up to the rift. She squeezes Bethany close, though Ellana keeps her arm tight around her own waist and therefore it's in the way between them.

"Please stay safe," she says, knowing Bethany is a capable mage, but that plenty of unexpected things can occur in the Fade.
sunshinethroughgrey: (Hawke Determination)

[personal profile] sunshinethroughgrey 2016-06-10 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Herc being left behind is still a stone that lives under all the Wardens skins - one where they were more than prepared to go and rescue him themselves, once they finished dealing with all the damned fallout. That Herc rescued himself - was both unsurprising and firmed Bethany's own resolve. No one was left behind.

She squeezed back, before gently releasing the girl, making sure to put a little more healing magic into her side. "You, as well. Healer, immediately, all right?"

"I certainly won't be stopping to view the scenery," Ellana jokes weakly, a brief smile crossing her lips. But then she grows serious. "I'll be asking after you, until I know you've come through. I'll see you soon."

And with that, Ellana walks out through the rift and back into the world, struggling with her steps until an Inquisition soldier finds her and assists her.
