[ Class Is In Session - Math + Self-Defense ]
Hearing of a school going up, Kirk naturally offered himself up as a teacher - not least because it gave him something to do here other than be a pretty helper to Sam's forge and a jack-of-all trades laborer.
He taught all levels of math, and any new students who came to the class would be asked to complete an exam that had problems ranging from simple addition and subtraction all the way up to the higher maths such as Calculus to gauge their skill. From that, he did his best to improve upon their skills and further their understanding. A little hard with a range of people, but he did his best, and he was more than willing to answer questions both related to math and to other subjects as well.
When he was not teaching maths, he taught Self-Defense with hand-to-hand combat - or at least he started to once he was physically well enough given that the Ritual had done a number on him. He took to the training area for this class though, and new students were told to fight him as their practical exam. It's not meant to be a hard fight, more like just a quick assessment of their current skill. He welcomed everyone from children to adults, but as a fair notice - expect to walk away with some bruises.
[ Stables ]
If the Western Approach and going after Servis had taught him anything, it was that he really needed to learn to ride something. Being able to hike and run was all well and good, but travel would be much, much easier if he could ride astride something with a longer stride and a touch faster than himself. Motorcycles were a long way off in this world.
So Kirk was being taught to ride, mostly by Sam and on a horse used with permission, though if someone else offered correction to his form as he practiced he would accept it. At this point, everyone was more the expert than himself. At least, so far, he'd avoided falling - for which his ribs were grateful.
Sometimes, though, he could be found around there just enjoying some time with the animals, petting and murmuring to them (and maybe sneaking a carrot to a tiny pony named Bill).
[ The Tavern ]
Most nights Kirk can be found here - work is done, and where else is there to hang out at night in Skyhold (that doesn't make you look incredibly suspicious)? But he liked the crowds and the warmth and the music and the laughter. He could usually be found with a pint of beer in front of him, slowly acclimating to the stuff, and sometimes he would hang out at a table with a chess set in front of him, waiting for a challenger. Other times he had a deck of cards, willing to play Wicked Grace or teach the good folk of Thedas some poker.
And maybe, just maybe, if he'd had enough to drink and laughed enough - he could be convinced to sing a song from a far away land or tell a tale of the same.
[ The Gardens - Specifically at Night/Very Early Morning ]
Even having found a steady place to sleep and steady companion, Kirk's nights were not always quiet and dreamless. He tried his best not to bother Sam on those nights, when sleep would not come, or more accurately he did not wish to close his eyes and see what his mind might twist together when he was not paying attention.
So on those particular nights he would slip out of bed and head to the gardens, sometimes late and sometimes in the early gray before dawn. He walked the paths, breathing in the scent of flowers and the earth. Sometimes he would find a space to sit and fold his legs and rest the back of his hands atop his knees, attempt to meditate in the ways Spock had initially taught him - though more often than not he simply created a numbing tingle in his legs and frustration.
Company, no matter the hour, was always welcome.
[ Around Skyhold - Usually Morning + The Hot Springs ]
Part of Kirk's daily routine was to run and run a lot. He could easily be seen jogging around the perimeter of Skyhold, sometimes with a shirt and sometimes without. Afterwards he usually went to the hot springs to rinse himself off, and in the early days after the Fourth Ritual to clean his wounds as well.
[ The Library ]
Kirk could be found here on and off, mostly coming to return books he had taken for comfortable reading back in the loft with Sam, but now and then he could be seen sitting at a table, taking notes on papers or in a journal he had secured. He was taking more or less everything he read in historical accounts with a grain of salt, but it was still important, he thought, to read such accounts even as he asked others about them.
[ Wild card me! ]
Because there's probably tons of stuff I didn't cover.

While Cosima is doubtful the springs will do her good, she also doesn't think it's wise to launch into a very long story about her illness with a total stranger who clearly means well.
"Sorry if I bothered you. I was trying to avoid that, but." A shrug. So it went. "I guess it's usually pretty quiet out here, this time of day?"
no subject
"It's all right. I wasn't actually getting much meditation done anyways," he snorted, giving her a rueful grin. "But yeah, it tends to be. The people get up early, but there's that little space where it keeps quiet between sleep and the work of the day. There's a stall that opens up in a little bit that makes some excellent pies for the morning if you like that sort of thing."
no subject
She comes to sit down next to him, since he doesn't seem averse to company. "So have you always been an up-before-the-crack-of-dawn type?"
no subject
No, there wasn't, not that Kirk had much thought about it. Thankfully he hadn't proven allergic to any of the wheat products here, which had been a concern when he first began exploring his dietary options.
"Oh, every now and then. I'm not the sleeping in sort, but then again back home I'm on a much stricter schedule than here," he admitted. "It takes more than a few months to undo that particular circadian rhythm."

"A Rifter? Yeah," he held out one of his hands and pulled down bandages he had wrapped around the palm, showing the green shard embedded into his flesh. "I'm from Earth, year 2260," he supplied, because that's usually the next question. It would have been for him, anyways.

"Hmm, well, we've more or less got space travel down," he told her with a grin. "I'm the captain of a ship back home, the U.S.S. Enterprise, under Star Fleet, which works for the United Federation of Planets."

"Heh, Mars isn't much of a tourist destination these days," he chuckled. "Constitution Class - which means she's big, about 400 on board at any given time. Federation ships aren't transport ships - we're exploration ships seeking out new planets and peoples and any phenomenons there are. We can render humanitarian and military aid when it is requested or absolutely needed."

He nodded. "That would be right. We have a science division on my ship, security, command, engineering, medical - all sorts of people with all sorts of disciplines and other skills not necessarily taught through the Academy. As for missions - in known space, rotations are usually a few months to a year long before coming in before coming in for debriefing and restocking. The one I was about to go on? It would five years out in unexplored space."
He had no problem answering her questions - curiosity was a welcome thing to him, and he had long ago come to terms with his presence here and the Prime Directive and how much he could say.

"Haha, yes, actually," he nodded. "One of my pilots has a hobby of it, but I have more official science crew who do specialize in it. If we can, we take samples from new planets we find to catalogue their flora." He cocked his head at her and chuckled. "Why? Are you a biologist looking for a job?"
no subject
"But, yeah. I mean, I'm a biologist, though botany isn't my specialty." His warming to the subject relaxed her further; she liked to talk to people about subjects they clearly loved to talk about. "We've just got the one planet of life to study in my time, though. Who knows what sub-specialty I might have majored in if I'd had a whole universe of options?"
no subject
"I wish," he snorted. "I would flown far away from here long before now, taken a few of everyone else with me probably too." Like Sam, and some of the other mages, save them from this uncertain world where people could so easily turn on them. And Rifters, of course. Try and find their homes, or at least something close to it.
"Well, you would be surprised. The laws of physics that we know actually do apply across the universe, and most life follows many of the the same basic rules that we know, with variations between planets and environments. That's what makes it amazing when you find something that breaks that mold, you know?"
He coughed and shifted.
"But enough about me. What about you? What's your world like? An Earth, I'm guessing, right?"
no subject
"I was a graduate student, getting my doctorate in evolutionary developmental biology. Um, basically, I look at how different organisms develop and use that to try to determine how they're related to one another from an evolutionary point of view."
Well, she had been, until she'd be sidetracked trying to cure her own genetic illness, but that's less fun to talk about.
"So, like, looking at creatures that seem very different on the outside and finding the ways that, at the genetic and embryonic levels, they're the same. Though wow, my whole field could be obsolete by your time. Maybe they've figured it all out."
no subject
He chuckled.
"It would be boring if science figured it all out. We should always hope for one more question, right?"
no subject
She doesn't ask about the genetic engineering. Instead, she added, "Are you finding that life plays by some of the same rules everywhere, or is each planet a new ballgame?"
no subject
no subject
"I mean, I guess a lot of scientists would be. It's kind of our thing, always looking forward." Which made Thedas something of a mixed blessing. There was a lot to explore, but there were also a few major steps backward.
no subject
He laughed though and nodded. "I'll take your application under consideration," he teased. "By the time I get back to my ship, who knows? I might have a few openings."
no subject
"I'm Cosima, by the way." It belatedly occurred to her that she hadn't introduced herself.
no subject
He laughed and held out his hand to her. "Jim Kirk," he said in way of reply. "Nice to meet you, Cosima. And I promise to always have a slot open for you."
