Between the bizarre references (she knew he's a rifter) and the inappropriately cavalier way he speaks to her (it's a terribly selective thing, when she remembers the maintenance of her dignity), her natural inclination to dig her heels in when someone wants her to do something is only reinforced by an increasing reluctance to come down anywhere near this stranger.
