WHO: Cosima Niehaus - and you?
WHAT: Catch-all log for August
WHEN: Handwavey depending on when your character will be around Skyhold
WHERE: ...Skyhold
NOTES: While Cosima is going to be ill in one of the starters, it is fair to assume she'll be back on her feet within a week or two, so feel free to assume she looks fine if you run into her outside the healer's tent. (Alternately, if you'd like her looking a little peaky as a hook, that works too!) If you want something other than the hooks below, or want to chat first, DM me or grab me on plurk.

I. Healer's Tents

Cosima has been instructed to rest, and at first, the instruction is unnecessary; she's too weak to do much else. But spirit healing seems to have done the trick, at least temporarily, and as her strength starts to come back, it brings her curiosity with it. Thus, whenever no one is there to order her back to her cot, she wanders - mostly respectfully keeping her distance, but occasionally asking a question if she thinks she can get away with it. Some of the healing is related to medicine as she understands it. Some of it she has no frame of reference for at all. But concerns like "not wearing herself out" are secondary to learning more about what's going on as they patch people back together. She's not as well as she'd like to think, but she's well enough to get restless.

II. Kitchens

It is well known that convalescence requires baked goods. Cosima is still hesitant about overstepping, since she technically hasn't joined the Inquisition; she's a refugee, and she's well aware of how long she wouldn't last if someone decided to kick her out. So she is very scrupulous about asking first before she takes anything and about trying not to be unreasonable in how frequently she asks.

It's not her fault that those little buns with the jam that tastes like peach in the center are so addictive.

III. Various Around Skyhold - Roommate Search

Once she's determined that she's eligible for a barracks room, Cosima has decided to get one. What she hasn't entirely resigned herself to facing is a randomly assigned roommate. She's too old for that nonsense. On the other hand, she doesn't exactly have a huge roster of acquaintances to ask. So she's compromising by asking around. If someone else is looking for a roommate, at least they can have a beer together and make sure they don't hate each other before committing to cohabitation.

Korrin frowns a little in concern at mention of an illness, but she doesn't prod, not wanting make her uncomfortable. "Yeah, and you have to take the library contents with a grain of salt. Even the stuff that isn't outright Chantry propaganda often has a heavy slant to it. And you're not likely to find anything as recent as the Mage-Templar war in there, either. Still, there are some decent books that could give you more context. When I head up there again to get something for myself, I'll see what I can pass on. I know what it's like to be stuck in the healing tents and bored silly because there's nothing to do."

"Anything by Brother Ferdinand Genitivi is usually worth looking into; he at least as sense to question dogma instead of blindly following it. And sure, the Chant of Light will give you a lot of context, but also check out the Dissonant Verses. What the Chantry bans is as insightful as what they showcase. And yes, they may be banned, but that hasn't stopped us from ordering and stocking the library as we please. The Chantry, leaderless as it is now, has a lot more to worry about than banned books."

Korrin crosses her arms, smirking as something else comes to mind.

"Checking out the history of the Dales can't hurt, either. A lot of what's written isn't the whole story and has a huge human bias...but I know for a fact that some of my elven friends have taken to writing corrections in the margins. That ought to balance things out somewhat."

"Oh yeah, that exists here, too. Mostly in terms of class, I think. Nobles deciding they're too good for everyone else and either not caring who's in their way or actively grinding them down. I'm sure there's more to it, but as someone on the fringes, that's what I see most." Korrin shrugs, not thrilled with it but compared to the urgent issues the Mage-Templar war presents, the bulk of her attention is elsewhere.

"I should mention that a lot -not all, but a lot- of what kicked off the rebellion was because of what happened in Kirkwall a few years ago. I didn't live there -qunari really wouldn't be welcome, for a whole other can of worms- but I know people who were affected by events there, and it's a sore spot for a lot of people. Me, too. I can't pretend to be indifferent to a mage who decided to blow up a Chantry, killing a lot of people in the process. The Circle there was a horrorshow, pretty much everyone I've spoken with confirms that, and the Templars were given way too much power, but deciding to speak for all mages, bringing civilians into it? That will never not leave a bad taste in my mouth." Her lips form a thin line, gaze hardening. It'd be easier to deal with if said mage wasn't still walking among them.

Korrin shrugs; it's not that she doesn't want to, so much as there are so many other better-qualified people to talk about it. "I can try, though someone else has explained it better. I'll see if I can get you a copy of The Tale of the Champion, by Varric Tethras. It's about his best friend Hawke and their group of misfits in Kirkwall and the events that led to the rebellion there. He's actually a part of the Inquisition now, too, and doesn't seem to mind questions about his books. Just look for the only male dwarf in Skyhold without a beard.

To make a long story somewhat short: after Marian Hawke saved Kirkwall from some rampaging Qunari -real Qunari, not like me- she was named Champion of the city. Which, for an apostate mage, is pretty damned impressive. Unfortunately, the Viscount was already dead thanks to said Qunari and Knight-Commander Meredith effectively cockblocked anyone else from taking the position, making her and the Templars under her command essentially in charge of the city. Things were bad before, with mages being made Tranquil for flimsy reasons and the Templars, but this took it to a whole new disturbing level. The only one who had any chance to temper her was Grand Cleric Elthina, who seemed to stay as 'neutral' as possible. Meaning she was probably just sticking her fingers in her ears and humming loudly while the city went to shit. First Enchanter Orsino tried to call attention to what was happening, but good fucking luck in Meredith-town. Things were going to hell fast no matter what, that much was obvious.

All that came to a head one night when Hawke and Varric's friend, an apostate mage called Anders, set off an explosion in the Chantry. Everyone it it was killed, and plenty more were killed by falling debris from the biggest building in the city. The death roll was in the hundreds, last I heard. Meredith called for an annulment right then and there, nevermind that no Circle mage had anything to do with it. Hawke was given the choice of killing Anders or sparing him and for some unfathomable reason, kept him around. Hawke sided with the mages, big fucking surprise. In the fight against Meredith, already unstable thanks to her red lyrium sword, became encased in said lyrium. Now she's a really gross statue in the Gallows and if Varric's right, kids play a game of who's brave enough to touch Meredith. No one does, though."

Unable to argue with that, Korrin nods and an apologetic smile forms. "A severe understatement, but yeah. Thedas isn't exactly a peaceful place to begin with, but the past decade or so of the Dragon Age has been pretty damn chaotic. I wouldn't expect that to change any time soon. And without a new Divine, the issue of what the Chantry does about mages and templars isn't going to get resolved any time soon. For now, it's at a standstill while we figure out this entire other can of worms that is Corypheus."

"That's also covered in Varric's book, when you get the chance to look it up. Or it might find its way here somehow." Korrin smiles and shakes her head. "I'm used to it by now, so it doesn't bother me. If anything, this keeps me sharp for the next time people are dragged through rifts, because that doesn't seem to stop happening.

Corypheus is an ancient darkspawn magister; once a human, once having served the Old Gods of Tevinter. That whole Chantry spiel about how Tevinter magisters physically entered the Fade and triggered the First Blight? He was one of those. Somehow, despite his massive amount of taint, he's survived all this time...even survived death. Hawke and Varric and their crew killed him, and he came back. No one knows how, and that's partly what has people so freaked out. This once-mortal mage has access to magic that's beyond pretty much everyone else."

"Ask Varric, he'd set you up with an agent. Maybe even his own." Korrin flashes a smile, then it fades as she thinks back to what they have to face. "Before he rips open another hole in the Fade and this world is torn to shreds because of it? Yeah, definitely. He's been quiet, though. It makes me wonder what he's got up his sleeve that we don't know about."

Straightening, Korrin sighs and nods. She almost looks guilty for a moment, but realizes a moment later that Asher had company anyway. They're probably gone now, though, and she should tempt him to eat something. "Yeah, I should head back. You're welcome, though, and if you have more questions or need to vent about how weird some aspect of Thedas is, I'll be around."
