It had been a good month so far. Kain had explored a great deal, seen some incredible lands and creatures, and overall gotten closer to clearing his head. He’d started even somewhat enjoying himself as he camped by night and traveled by day, unburdened by other responsibilities. But, eventually, he had to return. He had sworn his loyalty to the Inquisition, after all. He still had his redemption to work toward. So he’d started heading back in the direction of Skyhold.

Unfortunately, he’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time when a rift erupted. He’d started dealing with it… only to get overpowered by a desire demon. The creature remembered him from his trip to the Fade and was ready with temptations that overwhelmed him. Kain couldn’t stop it, not when the demon reminded him of what he truly wanted, deep down… to be stronger than Cecil, to be better overall, well admired and respected… and to have Rosa, all to himself. It was the Rosa illusion that really broke him. His love for her had been his downfall once before, and now it is again, in the worst possible way.

Claiming Kain was all too easy for the demon after that. All it had to do was dive in and take over the reigns. Kain’s mind was weak from his past experiences, all too open to being controlled by another. From there… the demon started testing out the limits of its new form, forcing Kain to do its will, exploiting his abilities alongside its own.

"You want to kill them. You want to kill them all." Came the whispers, and James had to roll his eyes, before he stated simply, "Yes. I do. I want to kill every single blood mage who has ever taken another's life. What is new about that?"

And there, the whispers stopped. Then they started again, "You want Ingrid, you want her so bad ..."

"Seriously, you are going to have to do better. That should be clear that I desire the woman I am going to try to marry." James rolled his eyes, flicking the hold off his sword.

He is eying the path of blood, before he spoke quietly, "Okay, this might be something along the lines of a trap ..."

Good. That's what the demon wants. Luring them off and perhaps using them somehow, perhaps getting rid of them entirely... the farther from help they are, the better. It all depends of course, on how this goes. There's a smirk on Kain's face as the demon wearing it continues slipping quietly through the trees.

It's trying out different targets, probing them, trying to find weaknesses. It continues with this target now, despite his initial resistance. The demon's tone is almost gentle, soothing as it makes its attempt to bargain.

"If you leave me be, I can help you... I can ensure that no blood mage who crosses your path ever lives... Strike a deal with me, and I promise you this."

"Excuse me - but you are one of the reasons that blood mages exist. You take their blood and their calling and twist it to your own purposes." James's tone is firm, and disgusted. "So let me simply say - No. Absolutely not. And if you try this again I shall do such harm to you that you will have wished I killed you first."

Templars. The demon laughs, an eerie sound that starts out in Kain's voice, but devolves into a higher pitch by the end, something utterly inhuman. The laughter echoes through the forest.

"All I want is to give others their deepest desires, whatever they may be. No more or less. If it's to harm blood mages, then you shall have this. Isn't there one blood mage you especially wish to see dead? One responsible for killing someone very close to you... Together, we can see that you get your revenge..."

James gritted his teeth together, but he didn't look at anything in particular. Giving the demon focus was giving the demon power, and James spent his entire life not giving demons power over him.

"I will get my own revenge without having to go to the darker powers." He stated with a hard tone. "I do not need a demon to find the person I am looking for, creature."

The hard tone at least tells the demon what it wants to know, that this one thing that's getting to his target. He's all for pushing on, seeing what else he can do with it.

"Yet have you found them yet, on your own? I could grant you unlimited power... give you exactly what you need to get your revenge... and more."

"Unlimited power is not going to find this mage." James stated grimly, as he looks down the path. "I have found more information just relying on myself, and my people, then I ever would dealing with a thing like you."

The demon is well used to this, of course, this little negotiation. Some are stronger than others, to be fair. Some are stubborn, like the human it's wearing right now, but they just require... the right thing to be said. Then they fall. They all fall in time.

Templars are an especially difficult sort though.

"How do you expect to have a family when such a terrible mage is out there, and your mentor goes unavenged...? How can you know peace when there's that and more enemies waiting... Yet if you had my strength... think of it, think of what you could achieve. Crush your enemies with ease and you will have that peace..."

And now, James would roll his eyes, and state simply, "My power comes from the Maker Himself and Andraste above. I doubt you can give me the kind of power that They provide." He stated sharply.

He lifted his chin slightly, "I'll make sure my mentors are avenged. But by no demon."

There's a "hmmph!" from the demon, clearly it's less than pleased with this answer. Here it had hoped this wouldn't come to blows... or at least that it could entice a new host for when it does come to blows. It's always worth planning ahead.

"Yet you wish to kill the one responsible... and you haven't... You will never know peace as long as the mage is out there."

"Perhaps not. But I will be happy to have faith and wait for the opportunity to come to me through the Maker's time and patience." James stated serenely, tilting his chin up slightly.

"Faith." The demon's voice is disparaging, as if it were a foul word.

"You mortals and your faith... You don't yet realize it's all pointless in the end. Faith cannot truly accomplish anything, it can't defeat your enemies or tear down walls. No... the Maker won't and can't do you the favors that I will."

"Yes. Faith. And my faith is stronger than your disbelieve, my demonic enemy." James stated, a faint tinge of holiness to his voice.

There's a hiss from the demon, annoyance and disappointment. Of course, the righteous are the ones who fall the hardest, when they're brought down at long last... and the most challenging.

"Faith won't save you from my power. It won't spare any of you from suffering and pain. That is, if you choose this path... It's not too late to turn back."

It'll offer that much of the option to turn away, to leave this place alive and intact. Otherwise... well. It's almost reaching the spot it's chosen for battle. It had anticipated it perhaps coming to this.

He has no doubt of that, which is why he is fighting all the harder not to lose this argument, to lose himself.

"Perhaps it is not too late -- yet here we are, demon. Do you fear facing the light of the Maker?" James hefted his sword, "For I certainly do not fear you."
