She listens, not interrupting, but when Leliana finishes speaking, Cassandra turns and starts to pace again - or, rather, stomp across the yard, now in irritation rather than worry. She sits down heavily on a convenient tree stump, dropping her head into her hands, and stays there, quiet and motionless for a moment.
The irritation is aimed at herself, it seems.
"What can I do, Leliana?" Her voice is low, just audible. "I do not - I can think of nothing else. He may be dead or dying as we speak. And I am helpless to act."
Leliana comes to stand before Cassandra, hands folded behind her back. There is a long pause before she speaks, debating the kindest way to say what she must, to try and maintain the tentative reconciliation that they are balancing between them.
Slowly, she exhales. What is that they have shared in common, even with so many differences? "Have faith, Cassandra. We can never be in all places at once; that we why the Inquisition has agents to do what must be done. We must pray that for the Maker's guidance and his blessing."
Leliana very carefully sets a hand on Cassandra's shoulder. "You are not helpless. Of all the people I know, you are amongst the most dynamic, the most effective. You are a force to be reckoned with, Cassandra. There are so many matters we must see to. Carry them on, see them through. Make it so that when your Lord Leblanc is returned you have time to spend with him."
She smiles, very slightly. "I wish my words were kinder ones, but believe me, when they return our people to us, I will do all in my power to allow you time to spend with him. And if they should not, then I will make them rue the day they dared lay hands on the people of the Inquisition, and they will feel the cost of what they have done tenfold."
Her words help more than any empty promise or meaningless platitude ever could. Cassandra looks up, her expression first hopeful and then determined.
Have faith. Trust in the Maker. And then, get to work. That, she knows how to do.
"Will you pray with me, Leliana?" She reaches up, covering Leliana's hand on her shoulder with her own. "Will you pray for faith and courage, and for their safe return?"
AARGHR I'm so sorry, I've been the worst this month
"Of course I will." The hand on Cassandra's shoulder squeezes slightly, reassuring. "Come. We can request that the Chantry sisters dedicate the evening's Chant to our missing, and offer prayers for them."
There are practical things to be done, but there is more that must be sought after to heal hurts in the soul, and she would never deny Cassandra that.
no problem!! but we can probably wrap it up though?
Cassandra smiles, touched by Leliana's thoughtfulness. Dedicating the Chant to the...the missing. Just the thought of it makes her feel more hopeful.
"Yes," she agrees immediately, getting to her feet, ready to go to the chapel at once. "That would be wonderful." She hesitates, then nods, meeting Leliana's eyes. "Thank you."
Not just for the Chant, but for everything. Her understanding, her encouragement, and her patience.
