The tables and chairs are set up, there's some parchment and a few quills for note-taking, and a table on the side has pitchers of water as well as a motley assortment of cups. He's done what he can, done the footwork and talking, and now has to hope it catches and spreads.

And hope Purrelden doesn't tangle herself around something with her leash again.

[ooc: hop on in, put up a header! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them on the ooc post or ping me on Plurk at Nadat!]

That they have Kinloch Hold in common perks her up, and Inessa's eyebrows raise, likely a dozen questions forming at once. She's not going to keep him from other students, though, and nods at the request. Nothing if not patient, the elven woman observes his work with the others and listens to the rest of his suggestions.

When he calls for a volunteer, she naturally steps forward. This, too, is reminiscent of her Circle days, always eager to prove herself to her teachers. Wordlessly, she reaches out to do as he instructs, observing how the barrier reaches to her attempt to 'knock' on it.

He notices the way she perks up when he mentions Kinloch, and makes sure to take note to speak to her again. He doesn't remember her (Elves weren't a total rarity but they were uncommon enough that he thinks he does at least remember most of them), but it's possible they only barely overlapped.

He's pleased when she steps forward to test his barrier. The candle flame leans away as if her hand was much closer than the few feet, but the barrier pushes back against her hand and the flame stays lit.

"Even though it's strengthened by the energy of the flame, it still recognizes the signature of the caster," he says, and demonstrates by carefully reaching out and putting his own hand through the barrier. "So it protects the flame from rain or snow - or bears - while still letting you go back and forth as you please. And when it's time to move on-" At that point, he snuffs the candle with a sweep of his robes, and the barrier falls with it.

Absorbing that lesson, Inessa nods as she lowers the candle. "Sound advice, and one I can see being used often. It is rare when the elements are not an issue, especially in the mountains." As for bears, well. That's what ice mines are for.

They have an audience, in the form of an adult mabari watching intently from the shade nearby. He gets to his feet, but Inessa gestures for him to lay back down for now. Let the lesson conclude entirely first, then he can approach. So, the mabari huffs and plops down to gnaw on...something...he found when Inessa wasn't looking.

North nods and moves on to the next part of the lesson, passing on a couple more tips and tricks before he runs out of time and the lesson winds down.

When it's all over, North tucks his staff back on his back and starts picking up the candles from those who didn't leave them behind, answering a couple questions from stragglers.

As it's wrapping up, Garahel stretches and gets to his feet once more. He approaches Inessa, tail wagging as she pats him. "Yes, you were very well-behaved. Good boy, Garahel. We'll treat you soon, promise." He responds with a happy bark, then noses in to sniff at North because new person.

North stops what he's doing when the big friendly dog starts sniffing at him, holding out his hand with his palm facing down for the mabari to investigate (he may have only spent the first ten years of his life free in Ferelden, but that was long enough to learn how to respect a dog).

"Hello there, boy, did you come to watch the lessons today?"

Garahel barks conversationally, that tail-wagging increasing as he sniffs and then nuzzles that hand. Inessa, relieved that North seems to be a dog-person, smiles warmly. "He did, indeed. I was going to leave him at the Grey Warden camp, but thought he might enjoy making new friends during break-times. Fear not, he is well-trained and knows to behave himself here."

North never got to have a pet, but he met his fair share of dogs as a boy. When his hand is nuzzled, he obligingly changes to pets, starting with friendly scritches where Garahel was nuzzling his hand. "So I've noticed. What did you say his name was, again?"

Yesss, you are his new best friend, North. Garahel rumbles happily as his mistress speaks up. "Garahel, after the hero of the Fourth Blight. He imprinted on me as a pup, just after I joined the Grey Wardens. We've been inseparable ever since."
