Raylan and Adelaide - closed

Raylan had twitched a little when Adelaide had volunteered to speak to Arlo. Raylan had specifically begged off, claiming Arlo's wife, Raylan's Aunt Helen, instead. He didn't go out of his way to seek Adelaide out, and hoped she hadn't noticed his reaction, but if he ended up sitting next to her as they ate dinner, well, that was just a nice coincidence, wasn't it?

"Either get him mad or get him to like you," Raylan said, as casually as if he were commenting on the weather. He hadn't looked up from his food, but it was directed at Adelaide. "Either'll loosen his tongue. Make him more likely to talk."

"Is he someone that is easily charmed?" Not that she herself was terribly charming. She could...attempt it if pressed, but more often than not? Such things fell to Ruby or her other Councilors for a reason. One did not do what she did to be liked after all- if anything it'd been a point of pride in the Spire.

Raylan made a so-so sort of hand gesture. "Depends on his mood. One'll be easier than the other, probably you'll be able to figure out which from how he greets you. Alcohol works on him, you're like to find him in a bar. The man is a coward," he said, jumping to a different thought without much warning. The knowledge that someone was going to talk to Arlo made him itch, but if anyone had to do it, he was okay with it being Adelaide.

"Why do I feel as though that is particularly relevant." More of a statement than a question- Raylan had...particular habits she'd assumed came from being in Kinloch hold. Preferences formed by his time there, by what had happened. Perhaps looking further back would tell her more but- he was as he was and she found him tolerable even on his most contrary days. They were, after a fashion, friends.

"How cross ought to I be with him on a scale of 'skipped meals occasionally' to 'attempted to sell me to the templars'?"

Raylan was quiet for a moment as he worked on how to word this, still looking down at his food. As if they were talking about the weather. He skated right past the comment on relevance, not sure what it meant and not wanting to think about it.

"Be a normal level of cross for how he speaks to you. He's got different moods. You'll know it's workin' if he tries to convince you he's stupid and doesn't know anything. He's lying, he's as smart as I am."

Raylan took a bite, but swallowed it quickly to talk more. "But don't feel sorry for him, either," he added. "The man's an asshole."

"So not terribly." A joke- one he'd see for what it was if he looked up from his meal. Being home seemed difficult enough. More so with what they've heard while poking around. It couldn't be easy or comfortable for Raylan- she couldn't imagine how it felt. "I'll try being nice, then. For whatever it is worth- not that I can hold onto such a mood terribly long."

The joke actually flew right past Raylan's head, too busy trying to contain the feelings boiling in his gut. Anyone who glanced over would see him looking perfectly calm, nonchalant, normal. But there was a tension to it that Adelaide, at this close range, could pick up on. He was working hard to maintain this.

The last comment finally got a quirked little smile out of him, and he glanced over at her. "Who, you? Naw, the very soul of sweetness and light." That was also a joke. He was settling a little, having gotten through the tough part of the conversation. They could turn it away from Arlo now, he'd given Adelaide the warnings he needed to.

"I am a beam of sunshine in an otherwise dreary day." Said straight faced and deadpan. That she could do. Some manner of distraction, also, she could do. Drinks. Arlo was smart. She could recall that try to find something that would be of use to them in their investigation. Make this as painless as possible for Raylan. "And you are an absolute delight, of course."

"I'm a fuckin' prince, and don't let anyone convince you otherwise," he said, now giving her a proper smile. The tension eased away from him, Raylan being somewhat confident that Adelaide wouldn't have any cause to bring up Arlo again, at least not for the evening.

"If you're a Prince I'm pretty sure you can afford to pay for this round." Because there will be others. They've a day to settle in before asking around- and something tells her she'll need the bolstering preemptively.
